I find it very psychologically comforting - you're not just in a jacket - it's large cover , a roof.
You can tuck your hands away even whilst using trekking-poles.
They do quite a good job of stopping wind.
And they give very effective cover around your head : I usually wear a broad-brimmed hat under my poncho-hood : particularly in driving-rain : the hat keeps the poncho-hood off your ears [pelting-rain noise] and keeps the opening broader and further forward of your forehead so you can turn and look around even with the Pack-straps and sternum-strap over the poncho.
Ponchos generally preclude the need for waterproof pants.
