So anyone here gone hunting for mushrooms? Or anything edible you can find in nature?

My father was going to take me morel hunting over at his house but he's been busy with work lately, is it still the right season to look for the things?

Depends where you live. I'm in southern KY, they're just starting to come up here. Picked probably 30 yesterday, I'm probably gonna wait a week and hopefully get a shit ton.

Morels are up in Ohio! Southern Ohio is booming and black morels are up in the north.

My favorite are greys and yellows. Ash, elm, poplar and sycamore. My gravy train is Southern Ohio along creeks and rivers looking for sycamores. Also keep an eye out for ramps/leeks/wild garlic and other fungus to eat

In Missouri, we're right in the swing of the season.

I went out with my girl and we found this in a gully on public land. This picture turned out really well, considering I took it on an old as shit phone. Missouri Wildlife magazine is apparently looking for good nature-y looking pics and I submitted this one, so fingers crossed!

I'll dump a few more of my finds, hope nobody minds.

Here's a yellow, the first flush we found. Most of them were greys so hopefully that means we have at least a week left.

We also found raspberries and wild onion, but didn't collect them because they aren't ready, I think that's closer to mid-summer.

Remember when you find them to immediately throw them in some water with salt. The salt kills the little mites and shit that get into them.

I had a handful I was carrying around in my shirt for hours because I forgot my bag. When I got them home and soaked them, the instant the salt hit the water a huge fucking centipede flew out of it and skittered across the kitchen counter. Gave me the heebie jeebies!

Pretty decent patch about 2 miles from my house.

All in all, I'd say we found 100. Most were smallish, had 3 monsters that I didn't photograph. I hope I can get about 100 more before the season is over. We froze our extra ones last year and had mushroom fries on our birthdays and other special occasions. I think I might try dehydrating some if the freezer gets full (oh god please let it get full).

Morel hunting is such a great sport. Everyone you meet is nice as hell (although secretive about their honey holes). It's also pretty decent exercise. My longest excursion was nearly six hours of climbing muddy slopes in the rain. I could really feel it walking up the stairs today.

Alright, well I guess that's the last one for now. I doubt ya'll could enjoy these pics as much as I do. I'm kind of a weirdo that way.

a bit too early for them here in western Pennsylvania unfortunately. especially since today was only in the low 40s. I haven't gone hiking in a week or so because of all of the heavy raining but last time I was out only nettles, mustard greens, dandilion greens and the early starts of fiddleheads were growing. I'm going out tomorrow morning so hopefully I will find more!

Definitely. Im in Iowa and often during the season I take sick days from work, get maybe 25lbs over a couple days and then sell for $50/lb. Such easy cash.
