Welcome to Colorado.
Drive out to a small mountain town as your base and go out from there.
If you're lazy like me, you don't even need to go that far. The main cities have large natural parks that feel like a mountain excursion.
Pic related, Garden of the Gods is like a few blocks south of a local high-tech business complex.
It's not all good though, nearly everything around here is either US military or a tourist trap.
I get tired of it sometimes, but I still feel fortunate to live here.

Every summer for the past three years, my brother and I go camping with some of his friends. Usually we go to either Sequoia or Yosemite. They've been doing it for more than 10 years, I started going once I graduated HS.

Eastern Norway. I have easy access to all kinds of terrain, like forests, lakes, rivers, hills and mountains, so I can enjoy all kinds of activities quite easily. Now I'm waiting for the damn spring, which doesn't seem to come this year, but at least I can still go skiing.

I grew up on a homestead in the Sierras, then moved to the California coast to live on a sailboat for awhile. Eventually I took a train across the U.S. to NY, and I'm still there now, though I took a few months off to just travel around in a car. However, I'm moving back down to the coast to start looking for some land to buy in the central coast area, hoping to get enough room for a garden and maybe some animals.

When I want to go out, I pretty much just ask around or google for good places to go, and go. I'm a freelance writer, so I don't have anything really tying me down. I just go where ever, whenever, no matter the distance. It's a pretty good life.

I live in the 4th largest city in North America, but I'm within 2-3 hours drive of literally endless Canadian Shield & Boreal Forest.

Now just waiting for spring, which as the Norwegian and Alaskan have pointed out is late this year.

Are there any good hiking places in the east side of Österreich? It's piss cheap to travel to Wien from Budapest so if there are any forests around I'm interested.

Also I'm planning on getting into hitchhiking so traveling on highways probably won't be an issue

Southern/Central Sweden.
I go to northern Sweden or Norway, last summer me and some friends hiked from Abisko and climbed Kebnekaise, it was great. Picture is some random and small but damn good looking mountain we found on the way.

I'd love to go to America or New Zeeland to hike, I'm in constant jelly mode when lurking /out/.

Yea the Wienerwald is quite nice for a day and the Wachau (Danube river valley) is gorgeous in the spring because of all the apricot trees blooming and you also have castle Dürnstein where King Lionheart was held captive. My pics where taken from a hill right next to it.

when i hear the call of the wilderness i go to the Mount Etna, it's a volcano, but it has some forest and a ring of free refuges around it. now im in piedmont, i live near the alps but the weather wont let me plan anything for this week. planning to go to germany in the black forest in a few weeks

Forest outside my town usually. Going there in an hour actually.
I love the mountains though, in summer there's not a week i'm not hiking somewhere, all by myself.
The quiet is most amazing. You notice it only when you finally get out of big city. Even at night the highways are busy, engines can be heard, low humming of turbines, mine ventilation shafts and finally all the people. Something like acustic background radiation, always there.
Mountains are free from it.

By car you can find some pretty spectacular landscapes.
I've thought of going trekking alone to some nearby national parks and such.
Alone because girlfriend doesn't want to so...
Pic from a recent trip, didn't go trekking though.

Chautauqua County New York. I really hope no one else lives here. Mild weather at most times. Winters last just long enough to be categorized as miserable. I have a few areas I go to hike. It's hard to find anything longer than a day hike, but whatever. It's a nice place.

Latvia, haven't had the time to /out/door too much recently, but the nature is rather beautiful and wild - and the country is sparsely populated, which means you can camp just about anywhere.

Pic is canoing couple years back, right after the ice breaks - good current, managed a good 100km in about 48 hours without much of a fuss.

I considered buying, but realized transporting would be too much of a hassle - you'd need someone to first drop you and the canoe off and then pick you and the canoe up at the end, so basically some poor sod doesn't get to go canoing, but just serves as transport.

So I've been renting - isn't too bad, last time I checked it was like 40 euros for a 2 day trip, per boat - so divided by 2, not too bad, considering they take you back to your car at the starting point afterwards.

Pennsylvania, US.

A lot of our state has much in common with the Alpine nations, though most of our elevations are much lower.

We have a lot of beautiful rivers, a lot of nice waterfalls, a decent amount of as-yet-untouched wilderness and, my personal favorite, a lot of stonework/brickwork ruins that are being reclaimed by nature with time. Plus, during winter everything snows/freezes over, so everything becomes completely different and it becomes a new experience.

Actually, it's very accessible. We were supposed to go to a much less known/harder to ascend mountain/waterfall, but we were rained out so we chose a much closer location to our starting point.

This is the Lehigh Valley Gorge.

Basically any direction outside of Pittsburgh gets pretty wooded. If you ever head up 43 by any chance and hit Negro Mountain (yes. really.) they have an awesome overlook that I'd recommend stopping to see.

Oklahoma here. Goto location is Wichita Mountains NWR, but there are quite a few neat locations in the state. A lot of people don't realize how beautiful this state can be - it also has the most diverse terrain per square mile in the nation. Just about everything from sand dunes and salt flats to swamps and forests.

UK here where the only places you are allowed to wildcamp are either a crappy bog full of gnats and rocks or the frozen wastes of scotland. Even then the places you can camp are limited and crappy.

Nowhere, because there is nowhere to go that can be called wilderness any more. Also, if you do pitch up illegally then you either get an angry farmer or counter terrorist police kicking your tent down.

From Labrador, Canada. Literally the town I live in you walk off the main road for about 10 minutes and you're in the middle of the woods, we only have one highway running through this part of the Province. Pic on the side of the mountain 20 minutes away from our cabin.
