I wanted to know what the folks here experience with hydration systems and various water related gear?

I have a basic 32oz nalgene tritan wide mouth, and I was looking into getting a hydration system for my ILBE assault pack.

I know very little about them besides camelbak and platypus are major players in the market, and I need a water filtration device of some sort for any real overnighting it.

Tips and tricks for them are welcome too. I felt so proud when I thought up using some denture cleaner tabs to clean my nalgenes after the cleaning brushes I bought were lost in a move.

backpack watertanks are a huge pain, id stay away from them unless youre doing some kinda competition endurance sport.
Complicated to clean, soak up flavor and are even harder to clean if you use anything but water only once, hard to refill on the road and unless youre riding a flashy bike or running a marathon its just awkward and you end up looking like an idiot whos trying too hard.
stick with bottles.

i have the platypus 3l insulated bag/hose version

recently on hikes where the weather was colder and the risk wasn't so much overheating, i just took a 1l nalgene bottle with me and this was enough

the bottle also has the advantage that if you are in very cold temps, you can fill it with hot water and use it at night in your sleeping bag

i also found it easier to use the bottle with tablets that provide salts/nutrients etc

i'm not against the hydration system, i would just only use it when temperatures were higher and i constantly needed to sip water

You would use that for filtering sedimental, microbiological, chemical or heavy metal contaminants from the water you want to drink.

Congratulations if you've never had any problems from drinking straight from source but I would consider it very risky in many situations

boiling works against germs if youre doing any camping.

Well according to the makers it does & apparently it's been tested for use by the UK Royal Marines

Quick question, can there be any risk at all with drinking from springs? And by springs I mean both the half-artificial ones with a metal pipe in a rock and the full-natural ones when there is a rock and a tiny stream coming out of it

Most of my gear deals with function and longevity having said that I have currently settled on a Nalgene Guyot Designs 38 oz and a Sawyer Squeeze water filter.

I use 1-2 platypus 2L bottles and a nalgene. I don't bother with those hydration bladders anymore, just too much of a pain in the ass. I also use a steripen to sanitize my water. Have had no problems at all. I think it's a pretty good system

I have a 3L CamelBak bladder I put in my pack. I fill it up every morning on my 5-6 day hikes. 3L is about what you need for 1 day. I could not imaging having to carry around bottles, or having to stop walking to open the lid and drink from them. Don't you accidentally spill water sometimes with a bottle like that. That's the last thing you want on a 10 mile/day hike.

Bladders are good for daytrips, but for long distance I carry nalgenes

You only need to do all those things because it holds so little water. Fill up once, in the morning. Set up your tent near a water source at night. I also wouldn't often consider drinking right from the source (I'm not always backpacking where there are 'springs'), so having a good pump/filter is a necessity. At that point, it's really no harder to fill a bladder than a bottle.

I've also been on a number of trips where you just aren't by water often enough to get by with so little water. 32oz will not get you to the next river.

Also, camping by water is not fun. It's colder and there are more bugs when it's the warmer seasons.

I carry two nalgenes, which equal to 2l of water storage, and if I know water is nearby, I only fill what Im going to use to cut carried weight. If I'm going without for a while I fill both and my supplemental storage bladder.

So I have the connivance of bottles, and a 4l carry cap if I need it.

I think, unless you know there is no water down trail, filling up in the morning all the way means that you are carrying more water than you need to carry to the next source, which means that you are carrying lots of extra weight for no really good reason.

I have some no-name 3L bladder that I put in my pack, a 32-oz steel water bottle, and a 1 gal folding water jug. I use tablets to purify, good old iodine. Taste doesn't really bother me so whatever. I did just get one of pic related, though, and I'm curious as to how it'll work.

That's true, water is heavy, but I tend to plan my trips such that each site I'm going to be putting up my tent for the night is spaced out enough that I tend to almost always just finish drinking my 3L right before reaching that spot. I do fill up less at times, such as the last day out, when I can get by on less water because I'm going to only have a half day of hiking back to the car.

What does /out/ think of using something like a bandanna to filter sediment, and then using a Steripen to sterilize? I bought a Steripen years ago, never gotten to use it, how can I be sure it still works? Anything helpful to know about them? Maintenance, limitations, etc? I don't have the manual anymore I don't think...
Also do the solar re-chargers work worth a shit? Will they work in overcast skies like during winter if I'm on an extended hunting trip? What about melting snow for water? Good idea?

I'm not sure if it works in large nalgenes, as I was under the impression that you had to make the steripen fit snuggly onto the mouth of the bottle, but I may be wrong on that

I've got a steripen. press the button once for 32oz, twice for less. wait for the light to flash, then stick it in the water getting the 2 metal prongs in the water. The UV light will turn on and then you just swirl till the other light flashes green. As long as the bottle is clear and the water isn't dirty looking you'll be fine. The bandana trick will work for sediment

I have an old Camelback Blowfish that I use for day hikes and mountain biking. Had to replace the bag a grew years ago thanks to some errant embers popping out of the fire pit. Got an Osprey bag which has a bigger fill mouth and doesn't retain flavors. Even use it for sneaking beer into the movies (2.5L makes shitty movies more bearable).

Osprey makes nice bladders. The antimicrobial coating has prevented mildew in mine so far despite heavy use for over a years and forgetting to empty it for kind of a long time a couple of times. It's really easy to fill, it manages to distribute the water pretty evenly even when it's not full, the mouthpiece is nice, and the magnet clip thing is really handy. I use a Osprey Viper 10 and 3 liter bladder for mountain biking and day hikes. The only disadvantage is kind of a big one, which is that it's hard to keep track of how much you have left. I ran out on a long hike once when I was pretty far from water and ended up with a minor dehydration headache. The solution to this is to use it in conjunction with a a 750mL or so water bottle, which will fit in the rear mesh pocket along with the filtration system, and drink out of the water bottle last so you can ration when you're near the end if you need to. That time I had made the mistake of drinking out of the bottle first in order to get the weight closer to my back. The water filter I use is the Katadyn Hiker Pro. I've only used it a couple of times, though. I'd like to hear what other people think about whether or not it's worth carrying and using.

No problems with it at all, except that when I hooked up the adapter to pump filtered water into it (without opening the top), it sometimes pumped air into the top that I'd have to release to get it all the way full.

Never mildewed; water tasted great. It's a lot easier to stay hydrated on the trail with the mouthpiece clipped to your shoulder strap. On multi-day excursions I carry that and two nalgenes. It's nice to have at least one bottle for lounging around camp and so you don't have to dig out your bladder for cooking water.

My pack did take a ~50ft tumble down a talus field one time (thank god I didn't go with it). Lost the bite valve and broke the hard-plastic valve part. I could still switch it on and off, so it worked for the summer, but those parts are expensive! Will cost you fully 1/3 or more the price of a new bladder just to replace the valve assembly.

Thinking of getting a couple of 1l playpus collapsible bottles for ultralight treks and weekends. Anyone have anything to say about these?

Nalgene bottles are good. They have survived Iraq and Afghanistan. I prefer the soft-side versions. If you drop them the don't crack. There is also something to be said for Camlebaks & like items. They are easy to carry and can be used to hold a small crash kit. Why not use both?
I very much like the filter I have (pic related). It's a purifier so no chemicals needed.

OP, don't listen to the camelbak/platypus naysayers. Those shits are awesome. I used one on several backpacking trips including a 10 day backcountry trip. Having your whole day's water right there, easily accessible hands free, is fucking awesome. I feel like it helps me hike longer because I can drink the second I think I need to and it replenishes. In addition, I had two wide mouth Nalgenes, hard variety, one used ONLY with water (pack off, around camp use) and one ONLY for gatorade (half strength). That way if you're concerned about wild life, throw the gatorade one in a bear box. It also resolves any issues with cross contaminating taste. For all of those, I purified with Micropur tablets and filtered large sediment with a cotton bandana over the mouth during filling. Never got butt pee, never had undrinkable water, never went thirsty (hard to do with plentiful streams and carrying 5 liters.)

If I could change one thing about my set up, I would get some of the UVPE or HDPE because those are even more indestructible.

Used a bunch of camelbaks in the army (HAWG/MULE/BFM)

Thing with the dromedary, it's 100 times tougher than any camelbak. Handy thing. Also available in much larger bag sizes than camelbaks. You don't HAVE to troll around with 10L of water though, fill it to what you think you need and rock on. roll one end up and you wont have slosh problems.

Interfaces directly with the MSR purification pumps as well, which is neato.

Hard canteens, both wide and narrow mouth have their purposes (i prefer wide, but narrow mouth GI canteens have their uses and trinkets that come with) but for general water carrying use I'm using a soft bladder, period

I've been using two 48oz Nalgenes for hiking recently, what i don't like about the bladders is you can't gauge the water level as easily and i am always surprised at how quickly they deplete.

I would suggest that's related to your drinking more & being better hydrated

Easier to drink while moving rather than having to stop & get a bottle out of your pack. You may not think that's a big concern but experience tells me otherwise, you'll drink more if you have a tube just infront of your face.

But still, I use a pair of One liter SmartWater bottles filled with tap for short hikes because they're narrowed than most of the other ones out there.

This is my favourite, too. I use the MSR HyperFlow Microfilter, all of it together cost me less that $200.

It is totally worth it to have water as fast as you can pump it, not have to wait to boil it, and not have to wait for the treatment tablets to work.

I rock a miox too, that's also why I carry 1 hard canteen + the dromedary... empty the dromedary and waiting for it to process w/ the miox dosing? hydrate off the canteen.

We have both because the wife carrys the pump and I carry the miox. That way if we're out separately we both have a water purification system, I can deal with the more... complicated one.

Army surpluss two quart canteen (plastic), I've had it since I was 13 years old. Its tough as nails, as is the canvas casing (which is lined with wool). Other than that, Portable Aqua tablets and the neutralizing tablets.

I carry a Nalgene and a 3L water bladder. You do *not* have to open your pack with the proper filtration system and an adapter. The Katadyn hiker pro comes with an attachment that mates directly to the Camelbak quicklink adapeter ($10). If you don't have a Katadyn, you can buy the $7 adapter for whatever filtration system you have. You can leave the adapter on to fill your Nalgene bottles or similar.

Having the bladder with easy access to a drink is very convenient. You can drink on the move without problems and if there are some miles between water sources, it's nice to be able to carry a large quantity of water that is not bulky (as the equivalent bottles would be) in your pack. This is why a great many back country backpacks come with hydration bladder compartments.

The biggest downside is the taste. The bladders do make the water have an undesirable (but tolerable) flavor. This can be bad if you are like me and sometimes have problems keeping hydrated. Fresh water, through the filter, out of stream and drunk from a Nalgene is way better than the water coming out of a plastic bladder.

yeah you can notice a strong plastic taste when you use new ones, but after filling and emptying them several times this fades away. i'd rinse them out at least 10 times before using them brand new and don't store bulk water in there for a long time, use bottles for that.
