Any Finbro /out/siders here?

I'm planning to go to Finland in the near future, and I'd like to prepare for a trip. When would be the best time to do so? I've looked at "Every man's right" that says I can camp on any public ground for 1 day or something. Also fishing. What would Finbros say the best time of year is for a CentralYuropfag to go to Finland?

Also general FinAppreciation thread.

Hi, Finbro here! I recommend you visit our beautiful country at early or late summer. Middle od summer here are too warm for max enjoying. You should definetly visit some national park, like Repovesi national park. If you want to visit Finnish Lapland, go western Lapland, near Sweden and Norway. Also be sure to try sauna(80-100°c is best). And yes, you can basicly camp allmost anywhere and fish whit basic fishing rod w/worms. Sorry for my bad english and feel free ask more if you want!

Not OP, but aren't mosquitoes a problem around early/late summer?

I hiked around Utsjoki in March, beautiful area, but once I got a look of the snow covered mountains in Norway it was all I could think about. pic in next post

Also bug repellent, what brand should I get? I prefer something without DEET in it.

Between August and September is IMO the best time of year to visit Lapland. The temperature has usually been under 0-Celsius during night by then, and majority of mosquitoes/black flies have died. You can buy bug repellent almost from everywhere and at least OFF!-brand works fine.

One of the two most popular places are UKK-national park and Karhunkierros in Kuusamo. Those are great places with good views and despite they are popular they are far from crowded (excl. the little bears ring -hike in Karhunkierros during weekends)..

How are the temperatures that time of year? I'm hearing different stuff about August about freezing or not at night.

The temperatures can vary quite much and it depends how up north you are heading. Prepare for -5-Celsius nights and you should be ok. There are usually many deserted cabins along the trails that are free for use. It is wise to plan your trip accordingly so that you can spend your night warm and comfy if needed, but bring a tent with you also if some cabin happens to be full..

Lapland is ok, but central Finland, with hundreds of river-connected lakes is what makes Finland special scenery wise. Look for Saimaa, the ultimate lake region.
