Hello there other outdoors people

I enjoy going out and looking for fossils, and stopped by this place named Black Canyon City, here in Arizona.

I was wondering if anyone could identify what is on this rock I found. I was thinking coral or something?

It is most definitely not a fossil. It is a mineral. I will correctly identify this mineral for you later in the evening unless someone beats me to it, because right now is the first warm sunny day we've had in 2 weeks and I'm taking my /out/ doge to the beach.

The white stuff covering the reddish rock appears to be gypsum. Google "rose gypsum" to see pure samples of what I'm talking about. I don't think you asked about the crystal on top, but I can't identify it. It could be gypsum too but a lot of stuff looks like plain milky white crystals

Its gypsum. Even the big crystals. Had it been left in the right conditions for longer, it would have developed further and been readily identifiable. You should look around the area again if you ever get the chance, you might find some more developed specimens like pic related. I always knew them as a 'desert rose'.

The smaller druse is probably gypsum like the folks above me said. However I suspect that the larger crystals are Calcite. To test this, take an acidic substance like HCl or vinegar and drop it on the crystal. If it fizzes you have Calcite. The crystals have an obvious scalenohedral habit to them, which screams Calcite

I understand your perspective of complete geological and chemical ignorance, but they are still diamonds. Take it from someone who actually has made a fortune with mineral and ore deposits. Like all this crystalized gold I bought off of hippy gem traders for pennies to the dollar, pic related. They didn't have a clue what they had!

Don't listen to these other people, the smaller crystals are indeed gypsum and what you have is a desert rose, but the larger crystals are in fact Aragonite, which is very similar to gypsum but a bit rarer. In a few hours I can come back and show how similar your Aragonite crystals are to mine as proof.
