What do you guys do for a living?
Hopefully some /out/ careers. I'm a college student right now, but I'm planning on trying to become a game warden.

Was just coming here to make a similar thread.

I'm getting burnt the fuck out at my current job right now and was considering trying to start working for the MN DNR since I love this state and the outdoors. Problem is that I don't really know where to start? Are there any half decent entry level jobs that don't require much and pay alright (preferably $10+ since that's what I'm making now)

What kind of degree would be preferred if I was planning on working for them? Biology? I live in north western MN so I'd be probably going to Bemidji State since its right in town, so my options are a little limited.

Anyone work with their states DNR/DEC/whatever your state calls it? Any tips?

Biology for wildlife management, forestry for forestry, might help to have a law degree if you want to be a game warden. If you are young enough maybe join the Conservation Corps. Stop by the state park and ask about menial jobs to get your foot in the door. BSU has an Environmental Studies degree with a few different emphasis that might apply to DNR jobs, but also a lot of jobs beyond them. But it is convenient having a regional office right in town. Not sure on the prospects right now but a degree in biology can help you you want to get involved with fisheries and management since we have so many lakes.

Just contact the DNR or browse their job listings and see what is required for one you like. Maybe stop by BSU and talk to the ES profs and get some help.

I'm 22, I've been bumming around as a CNA and was considering going into nursing. Problem is I'm incredibly burnt out from this job alone and the thought of trying to do this for another couple years kills me. Then the thought of being stuck inside all day and on call at random hours plus working damn near every weekend and holiday doesn't sound very fun, even if the money is good. Not to mention from what I hear Sanford is an absolute nightmare to work for.

I may do some of that though, thanks for the advice. I also vaguely know a few people that work for the DNR because I used to take care of one of their parents, so I may ask them for some advice. I'd just have to wait for one of them to come in is all.

Do you have to take that full retard first year experience class? Or was than exclusive to the BSN major?

Get a jump on whatever outdoor summer jobs you can now. A lot of them probably stopped advertising early April

Yeah I'm considering doing a year at NTC just to skip that class. From what I hear it's pretty much a "this is how you live without your parents" class that forces you to attend school events and make friends and dumb shit like that. Then they went and decided it had to he mandatory.

You from around here? With the summer jobs, unfortunately I've already put in for 150 hours of PTO for this summer so I can take a few vacations.

Yeah, grew up there. Went back to BSU because it was cheaper and could stay with my parents. I'm trying to finish up my degree in Environmental Chemistry because I'm already well into it and partly because I don't know what else to do with my life.

If I do that then I can't work my awesome outdoor summer job because I need to take some summer classes to round out my degree. The job is tough, but not one I'd like to do as I get older and advancement within is pretty limited. I also find that having to work in cool places kind of puts a damper on the enjoyment of those places.

In real life, I work for a charity and fight for equal rights and opportunities for all. (I also started up a community beautification group, and hopefully I'll be getting a grant soon. The government might be paying for me to turn ugly public spaces into my own personal gardens.)

Working outdoors isn't as glorious as most people think.

you get sweaty and wet, absolutley filthy

Which plant? I know a guy that works at Ford in the Louisville plant, and have family in the Detroit plant and Newark plant too.

My grandfather used to be the VP for the UAW region back in the 60s. From what he has told me, he used to know a few guys that could make people disappear.

I'm a carpenter. I guess technically it could be /out/ related. We usually do a lot of finish carpentry, because all of our guys are getting older. Not so much more framing.

But anyway, I live near the Adirondack region, and they've added some new bridges to replace what was once a natural path. I get it. Erosion purposes and what not. But, the craftsmanship is absolutely terrible. Very loose framing. Planks are barely nailed off and the execution was performed terribly. Gaps between the ground, steps and actual bridges.

I'm only complaining because I know how it should have been done and it was barely correctly made.

Nobody has fucking pride in their jobs anymore.

Kinda varies regionally, kinda depends on the specific discipline you're in and what industry you want to work in.

Oil&Gas has taken a pretty big hit nationwide, but there's some work on the east coast and gulf states.
Around me there's a lot of aerospace, politics drives how that goes but defense contractors seem to be doing fairly well. Not necessarily on a hiring frenzy, but holding their own.
Medical/biotech, again, doing well in some regions, not so hot in others.

so I can't say exactly what you need to be a special agent with usfws but can tell you that any "special agent" position is extremely competitive. And honestly the way it is set up right now just to qualify to be an S.A. you pretty much need to be a veteran. So honestly I would suggest join the military, become a veteran, let govt pay for your bachelors maybe even masters. Then you might have a chance.

I've thought about applying for S.A. positions but really there is just to much paper work involved in the job. I don't want to lose the field work. Now the usfws does have their ordinary law enforcement officers and that's all pretry much field work. For those positions I would suggest getting a bachelors in a natural resource field.

i'm in my first season on a usfs hotshot crew. i dunno how i like it yet. i worked on an engine for a couple seasons and filled in with type 2 crews but that stuff was pretty easy and i'm rather lazy. i think im going to quit fire after this season and go to like veg management as a cor or do boundary layout for timber. i prefer being outdoors alone and going at my own pace rather than busting my ass at a brutal rate and having to be around 20 other people for two weeks straight.

My problem is without something to actively do, I lose focus almost instantly,and so things with lots of paper work and/or drawn out menial tasks are hard for me to do. Meanwhile,put a saw in my hands, and I can go till I am out of trees (bad example,I suck at cutting wood). are there any /out/ careers tjthat could meet thithose requirements?

I build out and maintain cell sites for Verizon. There's a lot of really sweet mountain top sites I cover. I get to do a bunch of trail riding on quads and snow machines, it's great. Other times I'm working in the ghetto on top of buildings, not so great.
