I just bought a Intex Challenger K1 inflatable kayak for 80$ that I plan on using in canals and lakes. Pic related. It's very cheap but it has pretty good reviews for what it is and as I'm a poor student it should be a fun pasttime. Maybe later i'll buy a hardshell kayak.

Anyone else here has experience with kayaking? Post it here.

Canal: an artificial waterway for the passage of boats. An oflatablr kayak is great for what you're doing OP. That's what I started with. Get a hard she'll kayak as sion as you can. A 10 foot fishing kayak would be perfect for what you're describing. I have an old town vapor 10 angler for fishing the lake and canal where I live (Augusta GA). Not good for white water but you can get a spray skirt for some rougher water and rain.

OP here, thanks for the tips. I bought an inflatable because of the fact it doesn't need much storage room and I can take it with me on my bike. I'll only use it for canals and such. If I like the hobby I'll buy a better one later. they say it's a pretty descent kayak and, if I don't like it, or if it gets punctures in 30 days, I can return it with free shipping costs.

Hey /out/, i have a question for you in regards to kayaking.

I used to go kayaking every week for years with a club but i since moved to a place where i cant really get at a club and keep wanting to go kayaking, i have my own boat but i keep hearing horror stories about kayaking alone so i wanted to ask if its really as risky to kayak alone as i have heard or if its just scare mongering bullshit?

There is always a risk with any /out/ activity, and it's always wise to go /out/ with a buddy. That being said, if you have been kayaking for years then you should know your skill level. If you're confident in your ability and a strong swimmer then do what you want. I almost always go solo on flat water fishing trips, that's my me time. I would not ever do whitewater by myself. I personally have saved a very good friend of mines ass and on another occasion a strangers who was /out/ with his son.

I kayak alone all the time. For whitewater or big surf I would want a buddy for sure, but in calm water I don't worry about it. There's usually other people on the water around here, I'm fairly close to shore a lot of the time,I'm not taking any chances, and I can call the marine unit on my cellphone if I need to. I just tell someone where I'm going and when I'll be back.

It really depends on the terrain you are planning to kayak. A wild river with lots of waves, rocks, and such? I wouldn't go alone. Calm lakes, canals, no problem going alone.

me and a few buddies all bought cheap (but good for the price, about $400 for a yak, paddle and car kit) kayaks at costco last year and rigged a few rod holders on them. we go whenever we can, 4 other buddies just bought some last month so now we have a fleet. shit is unreal, we go on rivers so we can fish and rip through some minor rapids in the same go. cant fucking wait until it warms up

somewhat risky in rough rivers or big lakes if your a rookie and dont have the proper safety shit (pdf, paddle leash, paddle float, helmet if its rocky), other than that just use common sense. i go by myself on a small lake all the time

Looks like fun, just be careful you don't puncture it landing and launching. I have picture related, it's inflatable with a skin over it so it's more durable (also more expensive), and I can still carry it around by bike.

You might want to consider better paddles down the road, I had similar with another boat and they're actually pretty big blades and a bit tiring on longer trips. Also the joints might not be super strong, mine were 2 piece not 3 so it didn't matter as much but that's something to watch out for. They were better than a lot of cheap-boat paddles though,

the only 2 advantages of sit on that i can see is ease of access for your shit like tackle ect. and ease of getting in and out, but it you get a wide cockpit both issues are gone with a sit in, i fish in a sit in with no problem.

Id say just go with a sit in, recreational type. Theyre versitile, stable and good on most types of water other than whitewater and open ocean. Sit on tops are nice too, theyre a bit easier to get in/out of and you cant swamp em (fill full of water and sink) . Theres a couple sit on tops ive been looking at buying to fully rig into a fishing boat since they have more room to move and you can stand in most of em; so it makes fishing a bit easier but by no means necessary, i fish in my sit ins all the time.
