Hi /out/,

I checked catalogue for archery thread but didn't find one, sorry if there is one already I missed it

I just started into archery and I wanted to know if there is a really noticeable difference between a 45 lbs recurve vs a 55 lbs recurve, does that 10 lbs difference make draw back much easier?

As someone who owns both those weights (a 45lb horse bow, and 55lb takedown recurve) yes you will notice.

Just started archery a year ago. I started with a #40 recurve and love it. The guy at the archery shop that helped me pick out my bow convinced me of buying a #40. He told me that mastering a recurve is difficult and if your weight is high it will make it harder to learn good form. Having now bought a #50, I agree with this method. I think it's a lot easier to shoot a heavier bow after already establishing good form with a lower weight bow like a #40

40-45 lbs is the ideal draw weight for an average beginner male (I'd say pick 45 only if your strength is over the average).
I started with a 40lbs horsebow and two years later I bought myself a 55lbs Hoyt hunting recurve. The difference is big so you should only change when using the 40-45lbs bow means next to zero physical difficulty.
Using a bow that is too strong to you results the weakening of your shooting technique, since your body concentrates on the heavy load that pulling the string means and you cannot pay attention to the correct body posture and releasing method.

That's a bit reassuring, I was planning on picking up target archery over the summer. I'm kind of a naturally strong guy but also a bit of an idiot so I sometimes get a little full of myself and overdo things.

I guess I'll start with a moderately priced 45 then and if I want to step it up later I can.

People into archery don't like it because it's just trick shooting, not actual archery. It'd be like if someone said "look at this cool pool video" and it showed a bunch of ball hopping or whatever.

Seems like it's a personal thing.

For me, there's little difference between 40 and 60 once you've been shooting for some time. Meaning, when you're new, 40 and 60 will both feel heavy, but once you've worked those specific muscles a bit, pulling 60 isn't a problem.

I guess it'd depend on how you shoot too. If you release as soon as you draw, poundage doesn't matter as much compared to using sights and holding for a few seconds.

Agreed. I had two friends who got into archery after they saw me shooting my #55, so they each bought a 60#, but could not get close to full draw. it takes a particular set of muscles that people might not utilize too much. Unless you already know otherwise, dont go past a #45.

Any crossbowfags here? Just got a brand new string and got about 7 shots in before the thicker part in the middle started to come undone. I'm new to this, I was thinking maybe its because I need to wax the string/crossbow or because I bought a shitty string? Where can I get a good, high quality drawstring?

But I can tell you on my recurve bow when the string shows split hairs and wearntear I use bow string wax on it

The string should be served around the area that slides against the rail. I assume it is by the phrase "thicker part in the middle." You want to wax the string, but not the served area.

One thing you need to do with a crossbow is clean and lube the rail every so often. It's also good to clean out the channel the vane slides through. You don't need a ton of lube. I usually just put a few drops along the rail and then spread it along the length.

Since the string does contact the rail I would say don't cheap out on it.

I'm more pained by, a) the draw hand (is he actually holding the fletchings?!?!), but primarily,
b) The bow....

The nocks, - what is happening to the string! looks like its just entering a box 2" from each end...!?!? Also, why so far from the end - more bow sticking out after end of nock, more weight, slower bow. Same goes for limb thickness, way to regular - again - more weight, slower bow. Plus, with it being an american bow like that, its likely made out of Osage - I dont know much about native american archery tbbh, only really european, but why would you choose that section - and osage with a thickness like that - itd be 145+lbs!! Impossible in that stance from such a scrawny guy!

Actually, the arrow aswell - why is it so long! He's clearly already overdrawing/at max draw, yet the arrow seems to have another 4-6" left!

And the overall curvature... tbh I'm a warbow shooter so I like full compass... but it doesnt take a genius to recognise that bows want to bend in a spline fashion (minimising bending moment at each knot point) yet about 6" above and below the handle theres a sudden, extreme turn in the limbs towards the archer...

Yes. Just buy a new string for it. As the one you get with it is rather crappy.

Flemish Bow string Dacron B-50 is pretty solid.

I had a decent entry-level recurve for years that I cut my teeth on but after I shot a longbow for the first time I never looked back, hand-shock and all. I'd very strongly recommend that you shoot both a recurve bow and longbow before deciding on one or the other

Same guy, I went and shot it a few times yesterday but the string just started falling apart. I was thinking I need to lube it a bit but I don't think lubing it would've had any effect on it just coming totally undone like this.

Any suggestions on a good store to order from? Nowhere around me has them in-store so has to be online only. The string in pic related was like $5 on amazon and shipped from xbowstore I think.

When I string it do I need to twist it or keep it straight? Also, do I need to use special lube or some common one?seced

I'd rather just get a string from a company that's not shit. This is my 2nd xbowstore drawstring, the first one fell apart too. My first string was waxed and all that so I'm thinking it's the poor quality of the string.
