What is your ideal dog to bring with you whenever you go hiking/camping/hunting/etc?

Pic related. Can't decide on the American Akita or the Rhodesian Ridgeback. One was bred to hunt bears, the other to hunt lions, and both are some of the nicest most loyal dogs out there.

Whatever you do, pick a dog that's comfortable in your local climate. That means no long coats in warm regions, no short coats in cold regions, and no short nozzles like pugs have in ANY climate. Short nozzle dogs are a pain in the ass whenever it gets hot or cold.

You also want to consider the size of the dog. If there is an emergency with your dog and your way out in the backwoods, you may have to carry your dog out.
For me, 45-50 lbs is the largest dog I would take camping/hiking.

It all depends, I love smaller dogs like Beagles when it comes to grouse and small game hunting. I'd take a Labrador anywhere with me. I have taken my GFs Pomeranian out on the ice with me fishing, during summer he loves swimming, and he hunts bird by himself.

I have an american bulldog. I took him camping twice and he was the worst. They are bred for hunting and protection, so every time he sees an animal he charges at it and tries to grab it and shake it til it dies. Also at night every time he hears a noise he goes into super-kill-mode and gets all anxious in the tent.

I would highly recommend against bringing any kind of hunting dog unless you actually plan on hunting.

no this wasn't a reference to a particular dog/owner combo. I know theres good and bad seeds of every species, but I have heard that, in general, akitas are wary of everyone since they were bred to be guard dogs(when not killing a fucking bear)

We always had Akitas when I was a kid. They can be territorial but do fine if you socialize them when young. Don't Rhodesians only live like 8 years? For a camping dog I'd suggest something smaller just for food weight. A hound or pointing dog would be better for hunting. Like a bluetick or a brittany.

I've got a lab and a pitmix that i adopted from out local animal shelter, i would have to say that the pit is more friendly to the innawoods.

the pit we got as a 6 week old pup, they said they were going to put her down because of no pitbulls or dogs that look like pits inside of city limits.

the lab we adopted a few years prior and i think she was beaten or some shit before we got her because she is usually a nervous wreck, friendly as hell but at the same time she is always submissive when you walk by or even look at her.

get a Daschund, broest of bros. Most of them develop back problems though, so if you have a lot of stairs it's probably not a good idea.

As for hiking/camping dog, the only one i've ever had and could trust was a Boxer. Very loyal, great watchdog, always followed commands. Also ripped snakes in to tiny little bits on a weekly basis (Ausfag here).

I really need a dog. I am hesitant to get one. I grew up with shorthairs. Im in mn so we usually put a jacket on them in the winter and give them a heating pad in their kennel with some hay bales. In the summer they get a kiddie pool by the hydrant.

I've been around these dogs and they are smart, all of the german shorthairs my family owns retrieve pheasants. It takes alittle coaxing but its awesome. I pheasant hunt and need a pointer.

next point. I fucking hate labs. If I waterfowl hunted it would be a different story, but I don't. they suck ass at pheasant hunting. they just run way ahead and don't listen and scare up birds out of range. then they get tired and walk behind you and do absolutely nothing. worthless to me. god tier for waterfowl though.

I really want to get into skijoring but short hairs are just a smidge too small and not exactly perfect for winter. I would also like to be able to bring the dog on hikes and put a pack on it.

skijoring is a cross between cross country skiing and dogsledding. dog pulls you on skis.

so im thinking huskie shorthair cross

can /out/ suggest any breeds relevant to what ive described? greatly appreciated. I want to create my own ultimate mutt.

I take Humphrey with me. Double coated so he can't really go in summer unless we shave him.

He's chow/retriever/herding dog mix. Just large enough and muscular enough to carry his own pack, not so large that we don't have enough water or get tired easy.

the one akita I met was in a strange house with like five dudes he'd never seen. he just hung out like it was normal, seemed bored if anything. but, according to his owner, if you stepped foot on his family's property without permission heaven help you. his faggot neighbors didn't get this and got fucked up one day, then they called the cops and had him put down even though they trespassed. all of my rage.

it's the same with my german shepherd. she just ignores people, LOVES other dogs, but if you pull into the drive/walk near front steps, it's fucking go time.

ive got an australian cattledog. the breeds hardy as fuck, kinda got a wild streak in them with dingo bred into them. endless energy and are bred to take a good shitkicking. He's 40lbs so he doesnt tip my canoe alot moving around in it. Not quite big enough to fight off a bear, but he sticks close by when we're out in the woods.

My dog is half Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and half Labrador retriever. His parents were dark brown and pitch black. 7/8 of the litter are pitch black, and he couldn't be more yellow with a bit of white.

Agreed, when i take my beagle i am hunting. When i am camping and boating and just dicking around i would bring my pit mix. The beagle howls his ass off at everything liek squirrels and rabbits and half the time runs 300 yards out til he looks back to see if im there. The pit mix will stick by like glue, never venturing more than 20 feet ahead or behind.

Closely related to the shorthairs that you are familiar with, but way hardier. Double wooly coat means they can be totally comfortable in winter, and although they shed in summer, it means they won't stroke out from heat exhaustion in july.

Super hunters, one of the most versatile breeds around. Some say wirehairs water retrieve better than shorthairs. and if you are an upland hunter and pheasant hunter, they are super at that as well.

Loyal family dogs, but maybe a bit more hard headed than a shorthair as they have had some terrier blood added way back to get that wiry coat. But all around great pets and love kids.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks are god tier, but keep in mind they are sighthounds and may run the fuck off after anything that moves. Other than that, choose which fits better your climate. Hot? -> Ridgeback. Cold? -> Akita.

I had an akita rottweiler mix when I was a kid
didn't know anything about them, just bought him from the pennysaver because I had saved up for a dog.
Anyway, he ended up being an absolute dick to everyone that wasn't me.
Little houdini motherfucker too. We put fencing and chicken wire all over a backyard, which was already huge to begin with, plenty of space to romp around in, and he still got loose. He'd just show up every morning around 6am asleep on our porch, that is if he didn't get dog-arrested for wreaking havoc in the neighborhood and ended up in the pound. Absolutely wild ass dog with bear strength. Became impossible to walk as he got bigger because nobody in my family would take him out, except for me, but my mom was over protective and usually wouldn't let me go outside alone. Poor fucking dog.

let me tell you why, they can make a mountain lion piss itself so fast it isn't even funny. I've treed 5 lions with my Lucy when we were just up at my cabin for fishing. And they are very protective, my uncle owned my dogs father and mother and the father's name was Brutis, that fuck was the most overly protective dog ever.

I've got a rescued hound staffordshire bull terrier cross, kind of looks like a short, stocky greyhound. Looks a bit like the pic except his back half is brown and he's thicker. He was locked in a coal bunker as a puppy and his owners were going to "Beat the barking out of him". Some people are such shitheads.

I've also got an ex-racing dog but he's a bit crippled and can't walk too far.
