Kukri is hardly a knife. It was originally used very much like a sword. Besides, it's tiring to use if you need to work for extended period of time. A kukri is a one hand tool but as heavy as a two hand axe.

Hatchet

-doesn't need to be sharp to cut; blades lose their edge very quickly
-easier to use and cut with
-you also have the handle, which can be used for various things

It really depends on what I need to do and for how long. If the small axe is sharp it can be used as a knife for *rough* carving while still having the versatility to create large structures.

It also really depends how large the knife is. If it's too big it's just as clunky as the axe. I also wouldn't want to risk a break from batoning.

tl;dr: 60% of the time axe, 40% of the time large knife.

Machetes are usually pretty thin and light
A kukri tends to thicken up from the cutting edge, leaving it with thick spine and somewhat hefty overall.
There are some kukri shaped machetes but they're kind of shit gimmicky "look at my big curved knife" type of deals.

But its not that tiring to use, maybe if you're slashing through brush like you would a machete but if you're chopping through wood then its pretty similar to an slightly heavier hatchet

splitting wood is not "cutting wood" you're simply forcing the log in half,and a sharper hatchet will help you bite into it and it will glance less and the edge retention will be affected by the metal ,heat treat and proper or improper use.
