Thoughts on using vintage, pre-owned hiking gear? Also includes old military packs (like the ALICE pack)

I'm usually not /out/ for more than a few days at a time, and it's usually car camping, so I don't really need anything huge.

Seems to be the best option for me - most rucksacks fit my budget, seem to carry enough for a couple day's worth of gear, time tested by previous owners.

Plus I like the aesthetic.

I think theres a marked difference between vintage and used... I bought a 80s Swiss military pack... pic related, but not mine. Its durable, but certainly less useful than a modern equivalently sized pack. No hip belt, skinny little leather straps, heavy as fuck. Its a nice decoration, but I feel for the poor guys who were issued this thing. I think a recent model, used pack is a better choice. And by recent, I mean late 90s, early 2000s. You can go back a decade and get a good discount on used stuff without dipping into "vintage" territory. My GF spent pocket change on a old Camelbak Mule for day walks, and it is perfectly serviceable (with a new bladder of course). Gear of a similar era won't break the bank, and will probably function for another decade.

Well, I can speak for the Alice pack and the Italian Mountain Rucksack. Even though Alice has that metal frame which looks like a torture device, it wears like a dream compared to the Italian Rucksack, or any other pack I've worn. People talk about ditching the frame and just using the pack without it, but damn does it distribute weight well. One of the few bits of gear our Vietnam Vets were issued that wasn't complete shit. I strapped a bedroll (wool blanket, bivy, treated canvas tarp) to the bottom, and it still is pretty damn comfy.

I still have the Italian Mountain Rucksack, gonna use it for a day pack, but I was an idiot for torturing myself with it, no support like >>505414 model, though his is definitely more attractive.

TL;DR, there are lot of good packs out there that aren't considered "vintage" (which are a lot of money) but definitely fit the style and price range you're looking for. >>505414 said it best really.

I recommend Alice (as I affectionately stroke the top flap of her OD nylon body) as well as the Swedish LK-35, which fulfilled a similar roll and had a frame and waist belt. Whatever you choose, be sure it has belt. That's my advice at least.

Is the metal frame only for the large alice pack, or can it be used on the medium as well? Which one do you use?

my favorite pack i own by far, and it was free. when my neighbor died it was given to me because he knew i liked backpacking (the was back when i was a kid of course)

Stop being hipster trash, and buy something that works, not because it will make you think you look cool. Seriously. I'm a woman, and I don't even pick out my backpacks or gear based on looks.
And if price is an issue you can get used bags, or clearance backpacks.

Pic related. I've been using a backpack just like this for years now, inherited it from a relative who used to do a lot of rugged traveling abroad
To be honest I mainly use it for sentimental reasons and because I personally think it looks nice, however I can't say it's ever failed me thus far
It's actually quite comfortable. I might just be saying that because I've never really used a modern hiking backpack, but if it were a pain in the ass to carry I would've stopped using it a long time ago. Like I said before I'm not carrying a ton of gear on me, so I don't have a need to buy an enormous backpack.
Though when I really get into wild camping and long-distance backpacking, I'll be sure to pick up a sufficient pack.

Buying vintage gear is for hipster show-offs. It's not "time tested" it's used. That means it will break more and take more maintenance. A lot of vintage gear is really uncomfortable to use regularly.

There are plenty of companies that make new, functional products with a "vintage" aesthetic that will last for a very long time.

If it's budget you're worried about, buy something that's moderately used and maybe 5-10 years old. This isn't hard to do, there's an enormous used gear market out there.

If it's the aesthetic you love, as has been mentioned, there are plenty of new "vintage" style products out there.

bought an old swiss army canteen at a surplus shop some time ago. Made by Sigg. Quite nice although a bit small. Interesting thing is they used cork on the stoppers so it would not freeze shut as easily in winter.
