Do any of you guys/gals metal detect?

It's something I have been wanting to try for a while now but have no idea where to start with types and equipment etc.

I live in Devon and know I don't need any type of permission to search on any of the beaches in Cornwall. My father in law also has a large field which I would like to try.

Where do you guys search and what have you found so far?
