I was somewhat respectfull towards Les Stroud at first, but then I saw his docu where he goes to live "off the grid".
He just trows money at everything and has contracters build his cabin for him and install his solar panels. He even has his lumber helicoptered in at one point, ffs.

I understand its better to hire well experienced people for the job instead of fucking around yourself, but dont call it living off the grid when you do.

To me "off the grid" means not being reliant on "the system" or others. Or atleast as litle as possible.

Well yeah, but surely if once everything's built and from then on you generate your own energy, draw your own water source, dispose of your own waste, grow your own food etc. then that's still living off grid, is it not? You just had help to get there.

If you liked the author of Into the Wild, read Into Thin Air by him. It's a true story of a climbing disaster he was involved in on Everest. Really gripping.

me and my dad used to read this while camping, it has literally fucking everything in it. Traps, food, signalling, construction, first aid, fishing. I used to read it in church inside a prayer book.

Recently /out/ related books I've read:

Freedom of the Hills - A great climbing/mountaineering reference book and highly recommended to anyone wanting to get into those kind of things.

Psycho Vertical by Andy Kirkpatrick - A decent semi-biography and story of various (some fairly daft) fairly daft climbing adventures.

Personally I only care about it because people are always on his dick about being the real deal and constantly comparing him to Bear Grylls (who yes is just a stunt junkie but never makes any untrue claims about his set up)

I thought it was pretty obvious from the start seeing as most episodes have multiple shots where he would have to hike a good bit just to set up the camera, set it up, then leave it there to hike away again then come back for the camera to get the footage if he really was alone.

Not to mention that the insurance prices for having a guy out in the woods with no medical team on standby would be astronomical.

Bushcraft by Richard Graves.
Pretty much invented the word "bushcraft" it shows you how to make anything from anything. Cant recommend it enough.

I found Ray Mears approach in his book 'Essential Bushcraft' quite unusual. He pushes the idea of nature walks, campfires and drinking tea made of hedge trimmings. Now I'm quite familiar with building a mood to make your woman more receptive but I would have expected a meal in a nice restaurant, champagne and perhaps a Barry White CD. Holding my scepticism in check, I carried on reading right until the end. Unfortunately despite Mr Mears frequent talk of bushcraft this book contains nothing whatsoever to help you learn your way around `lady bits'. What a rip off!

For a much more practical introduction to this rewarding subject I would recommend the book `A Hand in The Bush' by Deborah Addington.

I read a few of mentioned books. I went for real not fiction. I went for actual hands on books and field manuals that can come with me and I can see these plants and animals as they look through the seasons. I also plant survival gardens with mint, oregano. and other herbs that grow back every hear. Its just something I do in good spots I urban explore. I have a few more books on mushrooms but they are in my van. Dude get real books. Once you learn it all you wont have to carry a book.
