The Salomon 4D 2gtx are great boots if you have normal feet. Very aggressive feel and are even good for running in.

I run wide so I would recommend Vasque St Elias GTX. They also run in narrow if you got them tiny feet.

I replaced my Lowa Renegade GTX boots with the St Elias because they slipped in the snow badly. The St Elias aren't as good as they Solomon 4D in the snow though, so I would really go with those if they fit you well.

No worries, is there anything specific you're looking for in a boot? Outdoorgearlab has some very extensive reviews on the boots I mentioned and more if you wanna check it out. They really put them to the test and give you a good idea of what to expect from them.

Just something that doesn't look terrible if I need to go in public with them. I have Iron Rangers for regular use, mind you, but obviously they're not going to cut it for hiking.

For looking good in public as well as fully functional I would say the St Elias is your best bet. They are full leather and don't look space age like the Solomons.

Just go barefoot. Boots are a waste of money. All of the "features" of your boots are useless marketing gimmicks. If you must wear shoes just wear regular everyday shoes.

I would go with the Solomon's man they by far have the most grip and excellent waterproofing. They require less maintenance than the Vasque St Elias because the Vasque's are nuckbuck leather with a Gortex liner vs Solomon are just Gortex.

Lowa Renegade GTX has the best waterproofing of the three, however if you are walking across wet granite they are a bit more slippery than the rest. Mud they handled decently, however sometimes you would slip unexpectedly.

Specify; pic related.
Secondly, don't buy the best boot model or your favorite brand, or the cheapest, buy the specific shoe that fits your foot the best.
Go into a store and try them all out. Walk around with them. In the same socks you're gonna use for hiking.

you can't go wrong with
Salewa, Lowa, LaSportiva, Meindl and dozens of others.

I go for day hikes in a pair of waterproof smith's i bought at modell's for $40. Only thing I did was put in a $10 arch support insole on top of the original.

How people can spend $100+ on hiking shoes is baffling.

I tend to agree with this guy honestly. I bought a pair of leather, waterproof Merrel's for only 90 bucks, put a 15 dollar pair of gel insoles in them, and they have lasted me on all my day hikes, as well as 3, weeklong excursions on the AT, camping trips, not to mention I tend to just wear them everywhere because of how much I like em, for the past 3 years. And I still hike with them. Overpriced boots are overpriced..

You are buying mid priced boots for casual hiking and that's fine. Start doing longer, more challenging stuff and your boots will be falling apart while the more high end boot still goes strong. I can guarantee you will go through 2-3 pairs before I go through my boots and it was only $70 more.

On a lark, I took some moccasins (the kind with double leather bottoms) on my last three day outing, and ended up wearing them the whole time.
