I actually don't live in Michigan, but I consider the west side of the state my second home. Pretty much grew up there in the summer and continue to visit year round.

My dad says there's snow by him though

Wait, what? I live in Michigan (west coast) and don't consider there to be anywhere worth backpacking in the lower peninsula. The best place we have is basically the Porcupine mountains, but that is by far the least fun of all my backpacking trips. Do people really come TO Michigan to hike/backpack??

I'm so puzzled by this. Flat marshlands are beautiful to people?
I travel 10-20 hours away from Michigan to various other states each year to see true beauty. I'm talking about mountains, cliffsides, *real* forests (not this stupid pine forest we have here), canyons, waterfalls, oceans, etc.

This is Michigans Grand River. I am a what some would call a extreme stealth roof/tree top camper but I go down the river all the time with personal pontoons or a inflatable of choice. This is kind of in my back yard. I can get /out/ real easy because I feel like Michigan was made for people like myself. On the Grand there are islands that are beautiful to camp. I often go from Lansing to portland. This year I am going from Lansing to the Michigan pyramids all by river. The thing about MI is where evere you look there is something to be seen. I never want to be anywhere else. Morel season is soon to be here to. Im lovin it!

I'm partial to Wisconsin, but I am biased. Michigan definitely has us beat in the beaches department, but we've got some really cool glacial formations and a more /out/doorsman friendly culture.

I've never been anywhere /out/ in Lower Michigan, just to Detroit. But I've spent some time in the UP. Beautiful country
