School me on knife steels. I'm thinking about getting a RAT 1, which has AUS-8 steel. is this good or bad? I'm trying to keep the budget low, so the price is great, and the reviews are glowing. I just don't know too much about steels.

Just focus on reviews. They (Usually) don't lie.

AUS-8 is a japaknees steel. Not the greatest, But certainly not the worst. Get it if you want to. It's a reputable brand.

I had the Rat 1 for some time, I love that knife. It held an edge, even after using it a lot. It was easy to maintain, easy to sharpen. I lost it and replaced it with a Izula 2. The Rat 1 will serve you well. If you want a fixed blade, you can get a Izula 2, no scales off of blade HQ for like 45 dollars. Dat warranty, dat edge retention, dat 1095 steel.

Its pretty much as this chart shows. It has a very good mixture of qualities and is a good all rounder.

I personally love AUS 8. Its my go-to steel for 99% of my knifey needs. SOG are a good example when it comes to great production AUS 8 blades.

wtf? 420j2 is used because it's cheap and is one of the most corrosion resistant steel alloys available, albeit nearly un-hardenable. Along with that- 440c @ 59+ hrc is even more corrosion resistant and is less prone to chipping than 154cm, s30v, d2, and other high carbon high chrome steels. Pay this chart no attention>>507323

AUS-8 is alright, not the best steel out there, but it's not shit.
Keeps a good edge for me, but I stopped carrying it to work in favor of my leatherman because I use it more.
Still carry it everywhere else though.

AUS-8 is the American version of 8cr13mov IIRC.
If you're not familiar wit 8cr, you need to be. It's the go-to budget but good Chinese knife steel. A lot of budget good quality knives like the Spyderco Tenacious/Ambitious and many Kershaws and CRKTs are made of 8cr.
