I'm not sure if it's like this everywhere, but I live in the mid-atlantic region of the US, and around here you can't call yourself an outdoorsman without people thinking you just said "I'm a hunter."

This is not an anti-hunter thread (I would love to go hunting this year) but I don't understand why outdoorsman cant just mean "Man who loves going outdoors"

It's also the first thing most think of. When I hear outdoorsman I instantly think of a guy hunting or fishing.

I agree, it's also the first thing I think of. Around here when you go to an "outdoors" shop it's all hunting gear and a small percentage of camping/hiking gear. Everything's in camo too...

Any non hunters on here refer to themselves as outdoorsmen? I don't, just because I don't want people to get the wrong idea.

Exactly, it's just how it is thought of by most people. There are tons of examples of this with other words as well.

good point. when i think of campers, i imagine suburbanites taking a ton of things with them so that it's like being at home, except in a smaller place.

but when i think of outdoorsmen, it's like real camping, and involves hunting or fishing.

I don't know... When I saw this new board called "Outdoors" I immediately though it was for backpacking, hiking, kayaking, mountain climbing, etc. I didn't even think it was for hunting conversations, and I live in Michigan, a land filled with redneck hunters.

The thing that gets me is that while granted there are a certain percentage of hunters in my local that are total badasses, most of these "outdoorsmen" wouldn't spend a night outside of their house, and at the minimum they need a camper that's big enough to haul their 4 wheelers around with. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's not what I think of when I think of outdoors. Again, I'm sure this is regional, but damn.

Texas here. All the hunters around here are casuals. When I saw /out/, hunting was the last thing to come to mind.

Dude I'm not even kidding. There are people up in here that call themselves outdoorsmen because they shot a goose once. They act like they're king of the wild but they can't start fire without gasoline, and get creeped out by the woods.

And god forbid if they can't get their dish tv oriented properly.

If you are spending enough time in the wild to be an "outdoorsman" you will need to get food from the wild. Unless you're willing to devote most of your time to foraging this mean you'll be after meat. This means hunting, fishing or trapping.
