I dont know much about the wastelands of west texas, and North Texas isn't very out.

You could do Palo Duro Canyon, up near amarillo, right now its probably the perfect time of year to do it too, weather wise.

I haven't done any backpacking in either park, but I preferred Guadalupe Mountains as a day hiker, mostly because it was quieter and I didn't see any border patrol snooping around.

One big potential benefit to Big Bend is water. If you hike near the Rio Grande, you won't have to worry about it. Elsewhere, it's going to be a very important issue.

it's been an mild year and very rainy (el niño?)

BB can usually get quite hot in the desert by May, the mountains are ~20 degrees cooler.

It's going to be hot. Start early in the morning, take a siesta in the middle of the day, and continue in the evening. Make sure you have proof of your US citizenship.

In exchange for the heat, you get a reliable water source which you don't need to drop off for yourself. Take advantage and drink a lot.

I carried my driver's license, but I didn't spend much time near the border so I didn't get stopped. Saw a truck pull up as I was leaving the Rio Grande though.

I know its a troll but, only legal if you follow the local state's carry laws. In Texas if you're not hunting (which you can't, National Park and all) then that means you need a CHL for a handgun. Also no going into any Federal buildings in the parks.

OC of longarms is legal in TX but I'm unsure how that'd play out in National park.
