Getting a new dog, what do sc/out/s think the best breed to go out with is?

hip dysplasia is really quite sad, and it renders them useless for going /out/

On the plus side, there are lots of rescue organisations for working dogs. do the right thing fellow sc/out/, rescue a doge

Go to the pound and look for a youngish wire-haired dog that's too big to be eagle chow but not big enough to have an inconvenient appetite. And before you ask about the wire-haired part, it's because ten to one a wire-haired dog has significant blood from a breed with balls of titanium and that's something you definitely want in a hunting buddy.

Alternatively, do your homework and then look up rescues for the breeds you're interested in.

If it were me, I'd go for a Lab or a Beagle.
My reasons are, great temperament, athletic, medium to short hair (less problems with burrs) and they don't generally intimidate people.

I can confirm this, my gf surprised me with a red heeler puppy a year or so ago. We live in an apartment, and as sweet as that dog truly was we just didn't have the space, time, or energy to keep up with her. We had to give her up, but hopefully she's with someone who can better care for her. Good ups for doing breed research first anon.

I have a beagle and if she smells something she will take off and forget about everything else. If OP gets a beagle, keep in mind that it's a breed thing and you probably won't be able to train them to follow you off leash.

I have an Australian shepherd, similar temperament and very easy to train. I haven't had to leash him in years except for looks sake. He heels or leads me by a few steps the whole trail and once spring comes around he will drag his pack out the closet cud he knows it's time.... I let him carry his own food and a toy and his couple other things. He's a pretty dog in the winter but I keep him buzzed for shedding and staying cool in the warm months. I'm from Louisiana btw and usually hike in the Ozarks
