Bivy vs Tent

quick background
>fieldwork in arizona summer
>overnight camping several nights
>multi-night camping at a few sites
>based out of car otherwise

A bivy sack would be lightweight and super cheap ($80 for the OR Bug Bivy) but a tent would be more spacious/comfy, plus I could go camping with my gf later on. It would weigh a deal more, though. I was looking at the REI Half Dome 2+, which clocks in at 220 and 5lbs. Thoughts/opinions/recommendations?

Kelty gunnison, salida, etc. Great quality for the money, great materials, they are light (you will share the weight with your gf). You wont regret it.

Bivy is an option for a couple nights thats it.

Tarp is the correct answer.

I really wouldn't consider this to be an issue. If the terrain is flat and soft (soft is a relative term) enough for you to lay down and go to sleep on - and spoiler: there always is ground like this, no matter where you are in Arizona - then you will be able to stake out a tarp. If push comes to shove, you can use trees and shrubs.
Source: I lived in Arizona for four years and did a lot of tarp camping. I currently live in Utah, and have camped in similar terrain. Never had an issue with being able to stake it out.

I would only bring a bivy if you can accept that if it does rain, you're going to be miserable and possible get wet, your gear will all get wet, and you'll be cramped regardless of weather.

Tarps dont keep the bugs out, though. Otherwise seems pretty cool, but the open air is worrisome for an /out/ noobie like me.

They make "bug bivies." Basically like a regular bivy except since it's just bug netting on the top, it's extremely light and it doesn't get condensation inside. Also, you can make your own with some bug netting, silnylon, a zipper and a cheap sewing machine from Walmart. If you zoom in on the sleeping bag in this picture, you'll see that it's inside of a bug bivy.

Only time I use a tent rather than this kind of setup is in the mountains above the snow line. I'll even do away with the tarp sometimes on a clear night where I know I won't be rained on or get all my gear covered in excessive dew

I'll camp in some ridiculous rain under one as well, it's fine. Takes like 5 minutes to set up. Easy to hang your water bottles off it on some string to refill them.
