Hello, /out/, I am a very new to hiking, I haven't even went on my first journey yet. I was wondering what type of gear I should bring, what is too much, and what is too little, and the best brands of the gear, thank you very much.

Good used shoes are your best friend. In other words, buy them new use them for a while BEFORE going on a hike - this is because new shoes can cause blisters in your feet and that is not very nice, considering you use your legs as your main "tool" there.

Another good thing to have is a nice backpack - it will make carrying stuff more comfortable, especially since you can adjust them to fit you perfectly.

Water purification can be useful if you don't want to carry much water. There are filters, chemicals etc. for the task.

Basic first aid stuff AND KNOWLEDGE are always a good thing to have.

Also, learning basic navigation and the map of your area is always useful.

If you live near an REI I would check out their garage sales they have. There is one in June. Good way to get gear at a awesome prices. You don't have to worry about spending $2k on gear, and not use it ever.

What kind of terrain will you be hiking, and for how long?

You really don't need as much as what it looks like from reading these boards.

Water bottle/Camelback.
0G good comfortable shoes, and a comfortable back pack. Maybe a pair or two of some good wicking socks.
If you're going to camp get a small tent, or hammock, and a tarp.
Small first aid kit, you can make this yourself.
Stove, or a backpacking grill to put over your fire.
Bic lighter.
Sharp knife. Doesn't have to be fancy like some retards think.
Fork/Spork.

Honestly, don't worry too much about best brands... if you're just starting out, cheaper stuff is ok. Sometimes the cheaper stuff is actually pretty nice. Here's a starter list...

Boots. This is one area you probably shouldn't go cheap. I have a pair of Merrell Moab waterproof mids. They're awesome. Very light, extremely comfortable. They're awesome. About $120. Get good hiking socks too.

If you're hiking overnight you need a pack. A good cheap pack is the Teton Hiker 3700. Big enough for weekend trips, but not too bulky for overnighters. It's about $80 on amazon.

Sleeping bag. A 20 degree bag is a good place to start. Would be good for chilly Michigan nights. GAnder Mountain has a nice one, the Chilkat, about $60. Teton also makes a decent 20 degree bag for about the same price.

Tent or hammock? This csn be a tough choice. if you want to test the waters on hammocks, get a Grand Trunk Ultralight, it's under $20 on amazon and is really nice. You'll need a suspension system for it, but you can also easily make your own out of heavy rope for cheap. You'll want a tarp over your head if it's raining, there's lots of options out there for this.

Now you've got your boots, pack, your sleeping bag, and shelter/bed. That's a good start.

You'll need something to cook food. Amazon has stoves for about $8. Buy a can of isobutanefuel for $5 and you're good to go. I have the $8 amazon stove made by "etekcity". Works fine. I also have the Stanley cookset, it's about $15 and works awesome.

Other stuff? Some people like a hatchet, or a good knife. I wouldn't hike without a good knife or multitool. My favorite knife I own is a Buck Bantam, it's light, cheap, and crazy sharp out of the box. No need to spend $100 right away on a blade. Carry a lighter, and a backup for fire like a ferro rod, they're cheap as well.

Either get a hydration bladder or a water filtration system. The sawyer filter is awesome, and like $20 is all. I have a lifestraw go bottle. Just fill it with dirty water and drink. $35.

Get a first aid kit. It's not really to save your life, it's to make small injuries more tolerable. In a pinch, they could help save your life as well, but they're really for the small stuff.... preventing infection, minor wounds that can get worse if not treated.

Anything else is preference. I carry some paracord just in case. You can modify your load out as you see fit.

This should get you started at least, for not a huge investment.

Water bags/filters/etc always good
tin/steel/aluminum cup for heating coffee(instant unless lug coffee machine with you), boiling water(everything breaks, is ruined(wet, fire, smoke,etc) and baking/cooking.

Tarp or Bivy Sack for your sleeping needs. Or a good tent. Reminder that the Tarps CAN
1) be used as shelter and flooring
b) be used as a hammock(strong tarp and rope)
z) just get a decent, small tent with rain fly and ground cover

as much food in small size as possible(generally via the wonders of dehydration, a wagon to carry canned goods, etc)
salt, pepper, spices you use

just get a semicheap folding saw, small hatchet, fixed blade knife(less than 6" to prevent theft via cops) and multitool
