have I gone full retard here, or am I onto something?

A standard 1ltr Nalgene bottle, a 'Source' Convertube, and a Sawyer Mini.

I wanted something a bit more hard wearing than the little roll up bottle the Sawyer Mini comes with, I'm not (yet) and ultralight fag, so an old pop bottle wasn't on the cards.

it ticks a box- clean safe water, but I can't but help feel it looks a bit well, y'know...

actually these filters dont do shit for viruss (which isnt much of an issue for most countries) or chemical runoff. so if your in a high agricultural or industrial area you should be careful

i was going to use the same for kayaking but after reading that i changed my mind

Water bottle with integrated lifestraw filter.

The filter itself isn't as good as the sawyer (filters less gallons before shutting off) but is a viable option since it's not that expensive.

I have one. Haven't died yet. Truth be told though I spent my childhood drinking from creeks and such as we played outside every single day, and I'm still alive.

Looks good OP...I mean the alternative is having the tube just empty into the bottle. I have the MSR Miniworks for the reason that it screws on to nalgenes, its awesome

Whats the difference between this and the water to go bottles?

Says it does viruses too and filters 200L between cartridges. £24 for the bottle and £7 per filter.

unless you're drinking ditchwater in a 3rd world slum you don't generally need to worry about viruses. viruses generally need a host and do poorly free in water in most /out/ places

there are only a handfull of viruses that area actually waterborne.

polio is one, which most of the civilised world is inoculated against now along with Hep A ( unless you're fucking retard anti vaxer) SARS may be an issue but unelss youre swimmind through Chinese sewers... in which case you have more to worry about

the Life system does go down to a smaller filter size, but the Sawyer will realistically last longer than you will if you look after it -going on the manufacture's claims it will do you 20 lrs a day for over 60 years

that level of filtration pisses all over what we had even 10 years ago for the price- I'm happy to trust it

OP's bottle rig is a bit exotic, and must weigh a fair bit even empty- remember OP the more shit you have in the system, the more that can go tits up with it- keep it simple mate

You'll need to either: boil for 1+ minutes, or use UV / chemical options.

Fun fact: Viruses can get through condoms.

A modern, non-damaged latex condom will not let a virus through. That would defeat its purpose.

And there are a couple of filters on the market which do filter viruses. Expect to see more of them and for cheaper in the coming years.
