Hey guys,

I live in Houston near Memorial Park (big park here in town with lots of bike trails) and I'm interested in buying a bike for running the trails. What is recommended for someone who's a beginner? I've been wanting one for a long time but I wanted opinions of bikes, maintenance etc.

/n/ is an excellent resource.

What you buy will depend on your budget and interest level. Most people learn on a hardtail. You'll want one with a good quality fork (NOT a Suntour fork. Rockshox Recon or better) and preferably hydraulic disc breaks.

Definitely a hardtail for a beginner (rigid would be even better). Suspension just trains you to plow over obstacles instead of learning bike handling skills and how to pick a line.

I'd look at used bikes, they're much better value than new ones. Disk brakes are nice but if you aren't riding in mud all the time rim brakes are good enough.

What you need is a bike, in your budget, here's the thing: THAT FITS YOU. Do some research. Talk to a local bike shop, maybe have them fit you. They will try to sell you, of course, but keep your options open. If it's a sport you'll get into, it's only your first bike, but if it's something you might just be casual about, get one that works for that, as bikes can be quite useful.

Get the best bike you can in your budget. As far as suspension, Houston is flat, correct? If there are jumps or short slides a hardtail will do.

Sup dude? Hard tails are pretty fun and can be pretty fast. You don't necessarily need the new, fancy stuff- it's absurdly expensive for what it all is anyhow.

I tend to lean toward the older stuff, with all of my bikes pushing 16 years old, but still tip top. My hard tail is a 1999 Schwinn Homegrown Factory Team bike, hand built frame. The only thing that I've changed is a relatively newer Rock Shox SID front with a remote lockout. Else, everything is bone stock.

Just remember that there are plenty of dudes out there who have the newest, sweatest, crippest shit and still ride like asshats. Buy something that gets you pumped and ride the utter shit out of it.
