Anybody know about or have experiences with the Blue Ridge mountains in western Virginia (not WV) ? I'll be there in august, and I wondered if any of you guys have experiences with the region. Will it be horribly hot in the summer, or is it at enough of an altitude that the temperature is mild?

Or other experiences in the region/Appalachians

Eastern tn. Spend a lot of in mountains. Its not that bad this far west of you in the smokys. It always feels cooler to me then it is, but there's a lot of shade. Nice dips in the rivers too.

I grew up around Bedford, VA. It can get wicked hot there and extremely humid. Getting elevation relief in the mountains helps but most of the towns aren't a particularly high elevation. Definitely aim for the shade and spend your time outdoors out of the heat of the day. Hikes near water feel a thousand times cooler.

Are the trails well kept, or super rugged? Somewhere in between? I'm going to do trail work, so I think i'm gonna need some seriously sturdy boots

Most are well kept. There are some that i have had to stop and look a minute though. I would recommend sturdy boots. Even the well kept trails are over rock and root. The terrain is almost always rough like that. Actually i can't think of any trails that arent like that. As far as dense brush and the like goes, usually they're pretty good. Sometimes the rhododendron and laurel get thick. But it's not unmanageable.
Do you know what area you will be working on?

I have done extensive stuff all around the country ranging from the Whites in NH to the Cascades and San Juan Range and Rockies in Colorado. For my money, Old Rag in Northcentral Western VA is a classic top 10 hike. One to remember.

Unfortunately, it's only problem is massive. It is mobbed the fuck out by people. No privacy or reflection allowed. Just beautiful views up on the summit and a nice mix of hike/scramble on the way up.

What I mean to say is, it is just a perfect, unique mountain.

I wish I got up on this mountain at some primordial time. This motherfucker as recently at 1970 must have been one of the most precious hikes on earth.

I grew up in Roanoke, VA, lived there for 20 years. It's a great area for /out/, depending on your interests. Whereabouts will you be? What are your specific interests?

To answer your initial question: it's hot as fuck. What else to know? Uhh, it's basically just a pretty regular place

Ah, I thought Roanoke would be super hot, I just wasn't sure about up in the mountains. I'm basically going to be working along the Blue Ridge parkway (Plateau District), but I'd love to do some hikes or find swimming spots. Any cool place to be on foot really.

I was there last year in northern Georgia.

It was pretty neat where I was, not sure how it is in Virginia.
