I got one o' them square fold-up ones like the yellow one in your pic. It has a R-value of like 1.5. It's pretty comfy and does a little good but frankly it's weak sauce and only for car cambin (I don't want to carry that bulky pile of crap).

I just use a hammock, with an underquilt. much betterer for me.

When camping, I bring both of the leftmost pads in your pic, and big comforter folded a few times, i lay the green pad down, then the rectangularly folded comforter on top of that, then the foldup pad on that. It's pretty dam cozy. Obviously not a setup for hiking.

I have hiked with and slept on one of those foldup pads alone, it's not great. I really had to rely on being super tired from the hike to not care too much about comfort.

Because when you have a sticky and you ask a question you get "READ THE STICKY!!!!!!!" Plus things and gear change every ten minutes and they become obsolete.

I care a lot about my gear, but I agree with this guy. There is so much subjectivity. And frankly /out/ is useful to me precisely because of the weird mix of doomsday preppers, boyscouts, gun freaks, drugged out hippies, hipsters and yuppies. I have learned a lot from people with alternative styles to mine. Some sort of "/out/ approved" gear list kind of goes against that strength.

I use the second from the right for hiking assuming it's one of the little self inflating ones. It's not bad, it's not great, but it fits in the bag and is better than sleeping on rocks. Usually I hike with leaves or pine needles being pretty easy to find, so I just lay a good thick comfy mat of those under the tent where my bed will go a viola.

I got a big agnes one that looks like second from right. I'm really happy with it, doesn't take too much air(effort) to blow up and it stows nicely in my internal frame pack. It feels like sleeping on a rubber pool raft and thank god it slips into the under pocket of my sleeping bag because otherwise I would roll off it. Especially in a hammock, actually it kind of sucks for in a hammock because you can't blow it up all the way. It works best only like a third inflated when using in a hammock. It's hard to get situated in a sleeping bag, on a mat in a hammock but I'm a nub at it so I dunno.

If I had an external frame pack then something like the far left might be my choice, idk.

Also there isn't a gear sticky because there are no /out/ approved things because /out/ is filled with people who all do it a little differently. Therefore a gear sticky would just be a needlessly long list of products and would less efficient than just googling things.

I too have an Exped Downmat 9 in Long Wide. By far the best I've used. Last winter in the Swiss Alps, I slept straight on the snow with it for five days and never once felt the cold snow below me. I just recently picked up an Exped Downmat 7 for the wife unit as she's a warmer sleeper than I am.

In my opinion, it's volumetric weight and actual mass are minor when considering that sweet sweet R value. What's particularly nice is how thick it is when resting on the ground; it's insulating and evens out undulations. The built in pump is a sweet feature too.

one thing I learned growing up near the rocky mountains is you need a sleeping mattress due to the rocky terrain. mats just don't cut it here. also with pegs you need steel to actually penetrate the ground.

I've found that it's less a matter of peg material and more a matter of peg design. I find that the reinforced V-stakes and tri-ridge stakes, such as the MSR Groundhogs, tend to be the best. In fact, I've never bent one. It's all aluminum alloy, but I find that some alloys are better than others.

I've been using a foam roll-up one like the one on the left for years. It's about and inch and a half thick, and smooth. People always talk shit about it, but it's light, comfortable, can be used all year, and won't rupture. Sure, it doesn't roll up into the size of a soda can, but it weighs less and is more comfortable than a lot of air mats I've seen.

also very helpful to have a small lightweight or mesh hammock to hang next yours to hold your boots and other gear nearby and off the ground. i just use the canvas of an old GI jungle hammock

Mine is a snugpak™. It hasn't done me wrong once. I've slept in about 15º with it and was a little too hot in my sleeping bag. You just have to make sure you hang it right so your butt or shoulders don't compress against it. when you get it right there aren't any cold spots at all and it's glorious. the snugpak was a little pricey, but for how well it warms me and how light it is it's amazing. i spent the money once and i just take care of it so hopefully it lasts me 20 years.

in most weather - even in like autumn and such, you don't really need anything but the underquilt and maybe just a fleece blankey. the underquilt has elastic cords so when you get in the hammock it pulls shut around you and coccoons you in its goodness. warmer'n horsecunts!

I slept on top of a medium sized Appalachian mountain Wednesday night and it was fairly shit, I'm not sure exactly how cold but it must have been in the mid to low 40's, and even with my 20 degree sleeping bag, two layers of cotton socks and a layer of Darn Tough socks on top of that, it was a miserable night of sleep (again, because I was suspended two feet in the air); my feet get hot or cold very easily, and all of these protective layers didn't do me too much good. I'll look up the Snugpack though, thanks!

also with my hammock there's a fitted tarp that attaches to either the hammock underside or the canopy topside (i own two so I can do both at once) and this acts as a windbreak, which helps a lot as well. so from outside to inside it goes fitted tarp -> underquilt -> hammock -> sleebin bag -> cozy-as-tits me

Yeah def both. Cool summer nights I bring just my fleece and the underquilt, hot summer nights just the fleece. It seems most people with an underquilt use it pretty much 100% of the time and just vary their top layer. But for me in the stinkin' hot summer I won't bother lugging the underquilt. Once you use it a couple times you'll know what you like/need I guess.

OH also, there's this whacky technique where people put the hammock *through* their sleebin bags so it's an underquilt/blanket. I don't do it, and it won't work with a bug net... but something neat you could check out. If you can unzip the toe of your bag you can try this.

How necessary is a sleeping pad anyway? I'm planning on doing more /out/ stuff this summer. But I just spent the winter in Ranger school and we never had any kind of sleeping pad/ground insulation.

Granted I woke up a lot of the time shivering uncontrollably in my sleeping bag, but I assume that's mostly because our sleeping bags are terrible.

The army sleep system doesn't include a sleeping pad? I could have sworn I saw pictures from the iraq war with packs with pads strapped on. They may have been marines though, I think the packs were secured to humvees or Lav's

It does but we never carried it/used it. Actually we had to carry it in the mountain phase, but we still never used it. in the other two phases we never carried it.

We almost always carried ours in conscription. Wouldn't have wanted to sleep without it on the cold ground in the winter, losing sleep without any reason.
You don't need it though, as long as you have spruce branches/twigs, dry grass etc. to put under the sleeping bag.

Being without it in the summer was fine though, then you don't even really need the sleeping bag most of the time so.
