HEY, i always bring a zippo. I just always have. I'm not stupid about it though, i will usually bring an extra 16 ounce bottle of fluid, and extra flint of course. The last time i went out i actually brought 2 extra zippos as backup also.

Why zippo when you can bic? Zippo requires you to maintain it more with extra wick, flint and fluid which dries out quickly. Bics will just light shit and wont dry out because it's enclosed. You could buy 20 bics at what you would need to have with a zippo, and it would last you 10 times longer.

If you rip your bag, you can still lash things to the frame.
The frame also doubles as a stretcher if need be.
Also, if you're not the guy carrying the injured party, you can lash another bag onto yours.
I don't care for machetes, but they are lighter than a hatchet.

you also get less nutrients from the dehydrated food because it never fully absorbs the water back again. your body also has more trouble digesting it.

as long as its not over 15C at night(or lowest temp) i bring a small soft cooler with frozen entrees from the grocery store.

no wait time, better quality meat(higher grade) and you absorb more of the nutrients.
not to mention at half the cost of dehydrated stuff its a steal(5$ per bag vs 10-12)

also no alzheimers from cooking with aluminum. even when i cook dehydrated food i let it soak like oats and cook it after an hour or so of soaking. the directions are fucking retarded and have no bearing on proper nutrition. they merely save time not nutrients.

only dehydrated shit i buy is breakfasts, mountain house egg burritos and hot sauce are god tier and i cant get that in frozen food, nor would i want to, eggs are notoriously hard to thermoregulate.

i bicycle tour and generally pick up 3 or so at the next town and they stay good for the 3 whole days in a cooler. i do this 3 seasons, in summer i generally dont camp much because i hate being too hot(canadian) and dehydrated shit is too expensive.

Most dehydrated food is not this big disaster you are making it out to be. Plenty of people have lived off it before. They will live off it for a weekend. sure you wont die but if you want to optimize your nutrition and save a shitload of cash you can. which will lead to optimal performance, more energy and less stress and more cash to buy other gear or go more places. seriously since ive stopped buying gear i go camping twice a month now. its barely more expensive than eating at home.

the weight difference really isnt that much i could easily carry 3 backpacking if i did much of it. the only concern is to not pierce the package, there is sauce in frozen form inside that will melt and the packages are cheap sometimes.

the only way id go full dehydrated is if i was doing some appalachian trail or what have you size of trip. even then i would try to find grocery stores to restock at so as to eat as little dehydrated as possible.

they also come in various sizes, if in a group you could buy the 4 person meals which could easily save over 30 dollars in one meal.

they are also gourmet as shit, with some spaghetti sauce spices you could mix it in with pic related and be literally right at home eating innawoods. frozen food is second in nutritional value only to fresh food, and in many cases is the highest grade one can find(like frozen peas)

its not common in america because camping there involves more often than not, summertime and temps well above most safe food handling temps(3-5C for anything but fish or eggs)

the food is precooked so it will stay longer than raw foods, im no chemist/engineer but as long as its not over 15C all day youd be fine for several days, and if it goes sub zero overnight your food will last even longer.

also the best food to pack winter/subzero camping when your water supply tends to freeze.

Dried or dehydrated food is lighter then you collect water, purify, and prepare. Not backpack with already prepared lasagna. In a10 man group for 1 night, maybe. It's a luxury item for sure, and I still haven't figured out a really good solution after some 20 years of camping - the inflatable ones move around and are never really tall enough and stuffing extra clothes into a stuffsack is lumpy - but if someone wants to haul a good pillow, I say more power to them.

I've heard you or somebody else say this before, and I'd just like to take a moment to remind you that there's a difference between dehydrated food items and freeze-dried food items.

Dehydrated foods are things like banana chips and beef jerky. You are absolutely right that we generally don't get as much nutrients out of these as we do out of fresh bananas and fresh steak, respectively, for example. That's because they rehydrate in your body, in your stomach, as they are digesting, which is not a perfect environment for this process.

Freeze-dried meals, on the other hand, are a totally different thing. These are things like prepackaged Mountain House meals. We rehydrate these before eating them, and the rehydration process is thorough and near-complete. There's no reason to say that your body can't digest these items, since they go into your stomach with the same water content as "fresh" foods.

When people talk about "dehydrated" foods, they usually mean freeze-dried, since the other type often doesn't have viable alternatives. Most people will probably prefer to take beef jerky over cooking a steak out on the trail (and the associated hassle of transporting a raw steak in their pack), but there are viable alternatives to freeze-dried meals, such as MREs and canned foods.

also i cook the mountain house meals outside of the bag, you still get residual aluminum from it but nothing close to fucking steam cooking inside of the bag with it.
like i posted before, i soak the food in water(for a lot longer than is recommended) and then warm it up like oatmeal.

id go elsewhere for great camping breakfasts but theres nothing ive yet to find that beats it

Where I live. leaving your butter on the counter overnight for all but 3 months of the year will result in a puddle of liquid butter on the counter.

This is why there are people who take dehydrated food. Because it's pretty much the only option. I know a dude who brings a frozen milk drink to uni because it's cold (not frozen, cold) for him at lunch time.

It's crazy how completely different camping/backpacking is in different countries. I couldn't imagine bringing all the bedding you dudes must take with you to not die.

This feels like trolling. How would you keep this frozen food frozen? You would need ice or ice packs which at way more weight than dehydrated food. Unless you buy it at the store and eat it the same day/night, you're not going to keep it frozen. It will give you diarhea due to bacteria growing if you keep it at room temperature for more than a few hours.
