OP here. planning to keep things minimalist/primitive as possible. going for about two weeks in early june to kill time before a workshop in northeast tn. trying to keep in the tn/nc area. maybe spend a few days in asheville?

It's got a myriad of trails, 32 miles of the AT, the beautiful Nantahala River and no more than 200 people within the entire park at a time, at any time. I just came back from a three night camp right off of a trail and in total about 10 hours of hiking up the surrounding mountains, I didn't see a single person nor a single footprint on the high stream-trail crossings. Buy a map from the information center and you're golden

Try the foothills trail OP, I did it a couple months ago and it was badass. It prety much follows a river, so plenty of water, lots of cool bridges and waterfalls. And best of all, i only saw 5 people in 5 days

As far as recs go, try Pickens Nose, depending on where you are it will be somewhat challenging to a long and challenging trek, but the view is fantastic (Google it for pictures), and as much of the AT as you can stomach for general training, it's what I intend to do the next time around

pickens nose looks great, kind of out of the way of where i'll be but might be worth hitting on the way back.

i know this is a slow board, but a drug band message board has been really helpful today. will bump once or twice before june.

hangover lead and joyce kilmer-slickrock wilderness came highly recommended. as did mt. sterling and linville gorge.

Middle Prong and Shining Rock Wildernesses.
Seriously, The Balsams are some of the greatest mountains around here, gotta love that spruce/fir environment
Plus, boulders made of quartz are pretty cool (Shining Rock)

Standing Indian is a cool campground but it can get crowded. It was completely full in when I went. There is anther one a couple miles farther down the road that is more primitive.
