Anyone here ever stumble upon some science in the woods?

Pic related. I'm assuming crawdad (crayfish) and water quality research. There are a few endangered species of crayfish in the ouachita mountains. But it could be anything.

That looks like something that logging companies do. National forests used to lease out parts to logging companies, as long as they replant it with the same species/density. A lot of the time this creates a temporary "field" environment where fox, raptors, etc thrive.

I regularly find small fenced in areas where specific plants are being grown by park services or whomever. They do it to replenish local stuff according to signs posted near them.

Seen a few random areas fenced off around a swamp, I think they contained some rare lilies and were trying to keep the deer away.
Also have done science innawoods while getting my environmental science degree, but not since because no one wants to pay me to play in the woods...

I'm a geologist so my life is pretty much science and /out/.

I haven't really seen any other science, aside from walking into a shit ton of beehives and biology stuff.

Can I ask you an honest question? How is your job security? I am mostly through an engineering degree but I did a year of internships and hate it. I think your job is my dream job but I have a lot of loans and it would take a longer time to graduate.

Im a geophysicist here. Lots of out possibilities if you want them. But as a geoscientist in exploration at least you are the most expendable class of employee. Less so in environmental work

Hey!

i do inwards research

feel free to look but don't touch, some of these experiments will last a solid year and then a week before its over some asshole cuts down a tree and builds a fire in the middle of your assay plot

I used to live near a trail that was marked as "experimental forest area". Now it's been turned into a park. It's really pretty and one of my favorite places to relax.

I've done a couple things, most recently I planted invasive wetlands plants, and then sampled and sequenced the associated fungal community in the swampy soil.

The idea was to see if the invasive altered the soil communities in a way that excluded native plants

and yeah it looks like thats what happens

Also, in what way were the native plants excluded? Did the invasive species nurture microorganisms that negatively effected the native plants?
