>>521240>>521397I should have specified that there are two ways to "primitive" camp in the Wichitas. You can stay at Camp Doris, which is your typical campsite with lots. Some of the lots are the typical drive-in lots with power, tables, grills, etc., and some of the lots are "primitive" sites which you walk up to a mile and camp at a lot with a picnic table and fire pit only. Both of these have a small fee, first come first serve I believe.
The more exciting way is to backcountry camp in the Charon's Garden area (that's Charon with a K, as in Greek). This is by permit only; they only allow ten over-night visitors for two-nights over two weekly time segment availabilities. You have to call ahead and schedule these in advance (very far in advance for busy time periods like school breaks). With these, you will hike out six or seven miles with all your stuff, and camp at a site you pick in the allotted region. There are no facilities at all. Camp fires are not permitted due to extreme wildfire dangers and sparse firewood availability at times. Bison will bother you and there are lots of snakes. But the night sky there is awesome, and there are tons of places to explore in the Charon's Garden area of the public-use segment of the refuge.
I know the backcountry permit camping sounds very restricted, but that's because this is a very special region to the area and requires a lot of special protection for the wildlife there.
