What do you wear on your hikes? As a girl who is new to hiking and other outdoor activities, I'm curious as to what's best to wear in the current weather. I'm going hiking Friday with some friends and don't want to be unprepared.

The clothing you wear hiking does not differ between men and women.

IF SUMMER

>Boots
>Gators (These are plastic over-socks which stop your feet/socks/shoes from being full of burrs and other crap)
>Sturdy shorts with a reasonable amount of pockets.
>A long sleeve shirt with a collar/collar-less shirt and a scarf
>Hat

WINTER
>Boots
>Gators (Slightly more optional now)
>Thick pants (I normally wear Hard yakka workwear, but I do a lot of trade-work so I'm a bit biased)
>Thermal undershirt/thermal underpants if you really want
>Shirt
>Windproof/waterproof jacket
>hat

If you have a proper sized Shemagh or a Keffiyeh I would recommend bringing that. Same goes for any well sized bandannas

I'll add that even in Australian summer I prefer to wear thick sturdy pants. Doesn't matter how fucking hot it gets, it'll always be preferable to a snake bite.

For that matter. Your outer-most clothing should be loose. That way animals like snakes will bite onto your clothing and not your skin.

just wear jeans and a fleece. throw a rain jacket in yr backpack (bring a backpack) and brings some snacks and water and a knit hat and a flashlight.

if yr going overnight obv there will be changes to that list. dayhike in the 40-50 range the above clothes will be good.

Gaiters are real important too if you want to keep the treks you're doing in good condition and free of invasive weeds. Several studies have shown degradation of quality in native plant assemblages along popular treks (theres a strong correlation between annual number of hikers and the degree of degradation. If you wish to keep trails nice, wash your boots before and after a hike and wear gaiters. also, if you find burrs put em in a camp fire - not just throw em at the ground.

If you're some place wet or humid I'd avoid cotton where possible at this time of year. It loses all thermal properties when wet and takes (relatively) ages to dry. Merino wool is god tier, failing that any close-fitting wicking/quick-drying synthetic shirt. I'm going to assume you'll be in a cheap (read non-breathable) waterproof so if you end up wearing wet cotton underneath it you'll be freezing. Even sweating into your gear on an intense bit of hill can give you this problem.

If you haven't got a proper micro-fleece that will dry quickly then wool is the next best thing. It'll get real heavy but it still keeps you warm.

I did a lot of walking without gaiters but they are good for all the above plus they stop you boot laces getting hooked and are great in snow and scratchy plants. I would not necessarily rush out and get them unless you plan to use them plenty.

Don't buy pants for a day hike. Just wear something you've already got. If all you've got is jeans, just wear them anyway and don't get them wet. Jeans aren't preferable if you've got something else, but honestly none of this shit is a huge deal. The only thing I'd say really matters a lot is your shoes, but even then if you're on relatively flat ground you'd be fine in tennis/walking shoes.

Anyways, I wouldn't use boots unless you have a pair you've walked "in".
- mesh base layer (this is the only thing you will use under your jacket when walking, even if it's -30 outside)
- medium layer of choice (this is what you will wear under breaks/when setting camp)
- wind breaker /gore tex
- underwear that you can use all week without getting sore
- a pair of light working gloves
- camelback

I'm used to hiking in very cold environments, but those things are fairly elemental.

Australian here. Nobody has ever used Uggs as a hiking/snow boot and I cannot disagree with using them harder. Someone above mentioned gaiters. Uggs will be like anti-gaiters.

Don't wear the hiking shoes if they're gonna be small/uncomfortable. Just wear tennis shoes/running shoes if you have to.

As long as the temp is above 0c, you don't need anything remotely close to "winter boots". All they will do is give you blisters (much easier to get with "winter boots" as they tend to hold vapor well). Chances are you don't have anything sized well enough to have a pair of wool socks in, so suck it up and remember to change socks when you're doing breaks. Take your shoes of and try not to sweat. I don't give a fuck if it's "Only a 10min break", do as I say or your team will have a whimpering bitch that will ruin the whole fucking trip.

A couple of pointers:
Water leads warmth 20 times as fast/easily as air. Keep a pace that will keep you relatively dry.
Don't ever walk with your medium layers, only your base layer - it's forgivable if you have some wool or quick drying fleece, but it's better to not do it.
Use your technical breaks well, always drink water, eat chocolate and nuts.

As long as you use wool, a good pair of shoes, and brought enough water, you'll survive the hike.

Wear a thermal baselayer. The underarmor type stuff.

Assuming you aren't going to be in knee height snow or precipitation, regular cargos work. Get something that is symthetic or at least a blend.

Wear a fleece jacket with a wind breaker. Layers is your friend and wind will steal your warmth. If you have something with pit zips, thats even better. In your temp days, I use either my TAD stealth or ranger hoodie depending on if its going to precipitate or be windy as heck.

For a dayhike then a medium/small backpack with water (2-3 liters), flashlight, lots of high-calorie food like trail mix and Ritz crackers/canned chicken, some gatorade, and a rain shell.

What to wear? Light/medium boots MADE FOR HIKING. If all you've got is riding boots or something, then you should just stick with tennis shoes that you lace up tight. A pair of jeans or any pants that fit comfortably and don't chafe, a t-shirt (preferably polyester wicking style), and a fleece should be plenty.

Don't go burning a lot of cash to get ready. The only things I would really spend money on would be the food. Otherwise there is a good chance you already have all the necessary stuff.
