The REI sale thread died sometime last week and Im in need of some opinions on gear.

1) Ineed a 2 person all weather tent and I need it to be as light as possible, anything at REI fit that criteria? Please dont recommend hammocks.

2) I need a headlamp that is at least 2 settings with the maximum being at least 80 lumens and I want it to run off of 1 AA battery. Does Petzl or Black Diamond make that?

what is /out/'s opinion on titanium cookware?

also, I rock an MSR pocket rocket and was wondering how a jetboil compares, any opinions?

I prefer stainless steel as it's cheaper. I'm strong enough to carry a small zebra pot. If you're into extreme stuff, like climbing, then UL gear is obvious choice. You don't need titanium gear on a dayhike.

BTW, using aluminium cookware will make you very sick.

never had that problem, and I have a huge aluminum pot that I use for real at home cooking.

I want the light stuff because my outdoorsy activities usually require me to carry a bunch of other heavy gear that doesnt allow the option of being light.

Aluminum hasn't actually been linked to alzheimers contrary to what those holistic tards want you to believe. Even if it was, how much aluminum would you really get from untensils and cookware? The amounts would be incredibly small or non existent from something like that.

Cookware - titanium if you're only boiling water. it conducts heat very differently than aluminium or stainless steel. if weight it the primary concern, then go with anodized aluminium. the weight difference from Ti to Al is not noticeable with out a scale. Ti sporks win just 'cause fun.

Pocket Rocket vs Jet Boil - I have JB, friend has PR, not much difference. both have issues with really cold temps 'cause the type of fuel. I like how the JB is all self contained. JB boils water a bit faster. PR is much more cost friendly. MSR's Reactor is better than both if you're dealing with wind.

Tent - "all weather" = "4 season"? Or just something that holds up in moderate rain? either way REI has a tent for you I'm sure. the lighter you want it the more $$$ it will be.

I canp a lot and sometimes that means winter.

someone posted some great tents in one of the tent threads, but they looked like they were for euros only as i couldnt find a distributor here in the US

Im not concerned about price.

I have a pocket rocket but wanted to know if jetboil was more efficient quicker or what.

I aware of the cold weather problems the fuel has but there are winter fuel blends now

I rock Snow Peak Ti sporks and love them.

Why is REI so shit-tier nowadays when it comes to prices? I was in there tonight and they had opinels for 15 bucks, and right next to them there were gerber fiskars knockoff hatchets for 60 bucks when the real thing is 23 at walmart next door. I think it's just because especially here in portland, people just have disposable money and think they may want to be outdoorsy someday so they plunk down a couple grand for a pack and a tent, but it made me have bummer feelz.

The only sleeping bag I have is my dads old goose down bag. It's probably too hot here in Texas to use besides in the absolute dead of winter. I'll be camping in a hammock with a sleeping pad. Should I get a really light sleeping bag or just use a blanket/quilt?

The JB is a more efficient, but only by a couple of minutes per use if you're just boiling water. The vanes around the bottom of the pot pick up more of the heat and can transfer it to the pot/water. So there is less wasted heat. The JB doesn't have as fine a temperature control. As the name suggests, it's meant to boil water and do it quickly. I think the PR had better simmer ability.

2) Just get a BD Spot/Sprint, single AA lights are rarer and you'll be fine with the AAA option. They last a long time.

Titanium cookware is alright, but expensive. I don't usually bother with it. Also it's a bit dirty to make, industrially speaking. You'll find a JetBoil much more efficient (down to about -7C, then you'll want a liquid fuel stove or something you can use with the canister upside down.)

I want AA specifically because ALL of my other gear that is battery powered is AA.

I dont like battery operated gear, but I cant deny its utility in certain circumstances, like ya know, a flashlight
slSo I minimize the logistics of the batt operated gear I carry by only having to use 1 type of battery

I guess you're maybe missing my point on REI. Saying "if price is an issue" is kind of ridiculous. Price should always be an issue if you're getting ripped off. Which you are on many things at REI. I just happen to be old enough to remember when this wasn't the case, when they reasonably priced things and weren't exclusively stocking only things that cost amazing amounts of money. Honestly there were very few big ticket items in there that weren't considerably marked up. They're still pretty good price-wise on packs, though.

REI doesn't sell as cheap as online retailers because they have several hundred physical stores to staff and maintain and they have to give 10% dividends to all their members each spring.

That being said, REI is in a near-constant state of sale these days, plus coupons, spot discounts and garage sales.

If you're not a member, you should be. That $20 will pay itself off pretty quickly.

I just bought one of these for a trip I plan to do this week. texsport 2 man camo. Apparently it's quite adequate and very cheap. Only thing I saw in my research is it needs to be seam sealed better before use. Seems like around 35$ average price.

I chose those words because in one of OP's responses, he had mentioned price was not an issue, but I was trying to keep my response more generalized with all anons in mind. In this day and age, paying retail for /out/ gear means you're either impatient or rich enough to be lazy. With a big sale an average of every 4 months and GSs sprinkled throughout the year, it would have to be quite an urgent need to make one pay retail. I say god bless stupid hipsters and the 1-3 percenters. They keep the company afloat by paying retail and occasionally return things I can then buy cheap at a GS.

I bought the tent based solely on specs and pole design. I couldn't find more than most-likely-planted reviews at the time. I've been completely happy with it. It's heavy for backpacking, but I haven't cared. It's completely worth the weight.

I also have this tent, just weathered a pretty intense storm in it this past weekend in the Ouachitas. Like the other poster said, it's a little heavy (right under 7 lbs), but well worth it.

Also, as I'm not a filthy ground sleeper I can't give you input on the tent. I prefer stainless steel, as it tends to be a little more forgiving when it comes to cooking. Titanium is fine, though, provided you're mostly making oatmeal and soup.

Check out the gsi outdoors pinnacle soloist cookset. It is aluminium but it has a non stick coating. I've read that titanium is a ballache to clean when food gets burned onto it.

instead, carry an SOL 2man emergency blanket, and use it as a tarp in case of rain. it will also double as emergency warmth if you need it. it weighs nothing, and the tarp itself is also durable

I took mine out the first time. Rained both nights. A little drippage and i sprayed with camp dry before hand. I think it had more to do with condensation. Wetness was where guidelines attach at sides and confined there. Thoughts on it: you could save weight by making poles in the field. Ropes should be upgraded. Pegs are surprisingly strong steel but could also save weight with aluminum. Length is just workable at 6'2 height. Room enough for gear as well. Overall im happy with it.

Aye well I also have a bcb crusader which I use for cooking when I know we'll be having a fire and I can just throw it on there. When were hiking places where we can't have a fire, then the soloist comes with me. The non stick coating really does make clean up a breeze though.

I think i'd stick with steel over titanium, plus the crusader is cheap to replace so I don't have to worry about it a lot.

It's great, definitely worth having, its fucking bomb-proof. I even use mine around the house for my coffee or tea because of its volume. There's all sorts of little add-ons for it too, though i'd avoid the plastic lid they make because I hear it melts too easily. There is a metal lid but it costs almost double of what the bloody mug costs. People make their own of course.
