Anyone else love this shit? It's so easy and light. Walmart sells single serving pouches for $4.50. They don't have a great selection though.

Cabelas looked like it had the hole product line but they were all 2.5 servings and $8.99-9.99 per pouch. I don't need 2.5 servings because I camp all by my lonesome and you can't really save the leftovers.

Cabelas also had a few other brands with a lot of different menus that looked amazing, but they were $10 a bag or not much cheaper.

Anyone have a good source for freeze dried meals?

No you dumbshit. Dehydrated food is dehydrated food. When you buy dehydrated food targeted at backpackers you're paying a huge premium for nothing.

Literally anything you can pour boiling water into that cooks and hydrates the contents will work. Go to the dollar store. Find those cups of dehydrated mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, oatmeal, noodles, etc. Buy those instead.

Anyways I've bought a cheap dehydrator for 20 bucks off CL. Been buying tons of cheap fruits (bananas, strawberry, cherries) on sale and dehydrating them. Cherries are bomb when dehydrated.

Bringing nuts and dehydrated fruits is great, they will last for months. (Rather than getting molded in a few days in the fridge).

Mountain House is only good for adding some variety to your meals. Instead of eating the same flavorless shot everyday, I usually break up my dinner routine once every 3-4 days to include one Mountain House meal.
I bought a Salmon and Pesto meal from Backpackers Pantry for the last day of my upcoming 30 day hike as a reward.

If the easy way to pack your meals wasn't buying bulk of all the same shit, I wouldn't ever do freeze dried meals.

Mountain House and similar sometimes tastes better than the dehydrated stuff I get in the grocery store, but paying close to $10 for a meal instead of ~$2 is not how I roll.

Also, I frequently eat 3-4 'serving' meals after cycling ~85 miles with ~50 lbs of luggage.

and want to add: To save space you can dump the contents of the cups into ziplock bags. Now you have convenient pre measured single servings.

Bring a collapsible metal bowl to hydrate the food in and eat it out of. Remember to wash thoroughly after each meal or it'll get gross quickly.

Keep in mind this method misses the point of camping for a lot of people: Cooking meat over an open fire. BUT, it is a great way to avoid dealing with bears.

They cannot as easily smell dehydrated food esp. if you wash the packages lightly and put your sweaty shirt on top of the food at the end of the day, as hunters do with their kills.

Dehydrated food also saves you from having to carry the weight of the water in it, which you can get from your environment.

For sourcing water I recommend the Sawyer reversible water filter. No cartridges to buy! Based on the same tech as dialysis machines. Just flush water through in the other direction when it begins to get clogged.

It will remove everything but heavy metals. You'll be fine for a few days but any longer and you'll want to rely on rainwater as much as possible, only using filtered stream water in a pinch.

To filter the water easily, bring two 2 liter bottles. They will screw into either end of the filter unit. Gravity does the work. Much faster if you drill a hole in the bottom of the top bottle and another hole near the neck of the bottom bottle. Otherwise you're stuck sitting there by the stream pumping water manually whenever you need some for drinking/cooking.

What does a sawyer filter do that just plain boiling can't? The sawyer can let bacteria or viruses through, but they can't survive 100C water for more than a minute or two.

Sawyer can't get rid of dissolved solids either. I'd rather boil than more money right now

It cleans water faster and more conveniently. $25 bucks gets you cool water without waiting to make a fire or set up your stove.

That said, if you find it convenient to boil all the water you'll need for the next day when you set up a fire at night, and you live someplace where you don't have to worry about rain or fire restrictions or whatever, then suit yourself.

Shit man, I would never go without a backup. A little bottle of pills weighs about an ounce and has negligible volume, but if your filter freezes or a bear eats it or whatever, it can save your ass for a couple weeks.

Tried the Mountain House "Breakfast Skillet" this morning on an overnight canoe trip. It's a mix of hash browns, scrambled eggs, sausage, peppers and onions. It was edible but needed more time than the 9 minutes indicated in the directions plus it also required multiple stirrings to get the liquid off the bottom and distributed throughout the bag. A little bit of Tabasco and black pepper would probably make it much more palatable if not downright tasty. I'll probably get another bag or two of it this summer.

the water was a'rollin when I poured it in...

The biggest issue was that the water didn't seem to be fully absorbed even after almost double the recommended amount of time.

non stick camp cookware is alright, but virtually all of them are not totally non-stick, and are expensive

the mountain house pouches are disposable.. you can burn them in your fire, and you only use your cookware for boiling water

plus its not that expensive, you're only paying a 1-2$ premium per meal.

Plus, you don't need to bring that much fuel (not an issue if you can start a fire obviously).

Still, i boil my water, the Sawyer is just a backup plan. I usually drink nothing but tea and coffee. Boiling a litre of water costs me about 60ml alcohol in the open, about 30ml with a really good wind cover. About 110ml fit in a trangia, so i'm good for a day (or two, if i build a proper wind cover).

I have an old 500ml Sigg bottle which is used for alcohol only, so it's not an issue. Burning alcohol is available in almost any place around here, 1 litre costs 2 to 3 eurobucks.

BTW, if you bring a sawyer and you are in the cold, make sure it doesn't freeze once used. The ice crystals destroy the filter material. It's ok to freeze if it never was used.

I see them all over the place where I live (Czech republic). Tesco, Billa, Lidl, everywhere they have something like this. I'd say it can handle the water, perhaps not a rolling boil, but I personally don't like my food boiling hot, and would rather pop it in a pot and cook it there.

You also need to consider. Most those pasta sides and other noodle dishes that are -$2.00

All need cooking time. Not just hydration time. You need to boil the noodles for 6-10mins on top of your boil time.

This used more fuel. And if your using a alcohol stove or don't have good wood source. This can be a negative.

I don't mind the pre done freeze dry meals. Some suck but some taste alright.

I take them some times. With other stuff I pre set up my self like other have suggested. I also take fresh food with me backpacking. I know what will go bad when. And deal with it.
