I'm an infrequent backpacker who's looking for a good camp multitool. I have a lm wave. but it has so many redundant tools and tools i can't see myself needing that i was looking for a more elegant multitool that does not have multiple knives, bottle openers, screwdrivers and other tools i will not use. What does /out/ recommend

Interesting, I find the pliers to be the most used tool, primarily for pulling cups and pots off the fire. But that's just my way of cooking, otherwise I'd agree with you, a good Sussie would be lighter.

My advice OP? The Leatherman Wave is IMO, one of the greatest and most versatile multitools at its pricepoint. But if you want another multitool, perhaps as a dedicated backpacking tool, I recommend either the Sidekick, the Skeletool, the Freestyle (which is another version of the Skeletool), or a SAK.
I chose the Sidekick because I wanted it for work (I run wire and instal alarms), and it was affordable. The saw for it's size is decent, and the accompanied tools are non intrusive and have helped at work. It's also less expensive than the Skeletool.

I use the pliers a lot, actually I use pretty much everything on my original Supertool, but I boat and mountain bike as well. I could live without them and the file for just backpacking, and the SAK is more comfortable when using the knife. The saw is handy for clearing light brush on the trail but a bit small for firewood.

I would like to have a CC permit and possibility to own every gun I want, but here carrying it while out would only signify more dead weight. As far as carrying while out in America I understand the need though.

There's no wildlife that will try to hurt us, no feral hillbillies that will try to eat us, and no meth addicts trying to rape us, and no all encroaching sense of paranoia that you need guns because everyone else might have a gun.

Like the guy said, carrying a gun over here unless, you're going shooting, is just an unneccessary encumberance for 99% of activities.

Got mine two years ago for $30 and it's the most useful edc tool i've ever had. Can't beat the leatherman warranty, either - 25 year warranty and 9/10 times they send you a refurb'd replacement of the same tool.

I work in IT so I'm constantly using it to open up PC cases, install routers and switches, and running wires - but I'm also frequently /out/ on day trips to the woods with my brother and have used it to make repairs to the truck and dirtbike, pull splinters, and remove intrusive branches from the trails.

i got one for my brother when i needed to save on shipping costs with my Micra and i was extremely hesitant to sell that fucking sidekick to him. however, i figured i did't really need one since i have my Skeletool CX and am planning to get a Surge or MUT.

I have before. Sold them my indash gps/dvd unit from my suv that was totalled. Paid $600 for it at the time. Sold it to them for $200. But I installed it for them.

If a basic leatherman has too much shit on it then you probably just need a knife, get a good blade and that's that.

I've had the same leatherman for almost 15 years now. works a treat and I take care of it, pliers are handy as fuck, as well flat head screwdriver style tools, a tool for boring holes into hard stuff, screwdriver, file, wood saw and can opener and spare blade. Probably the only thing I never use is the file. Everything else gets used pretty regularly even around home.

A few of my friends have the newer style leathermans and they seem to break all the time.

When I am up to camp I mostly use a hatchet/axe or a ~4" fixed-blade knife for heavy cutting. Nothing fancy, just whatever I could find in the hardware store. I have a leatherman juice for other stuff, and don't find any of the tools to be redundant at this point (I use the corkscrew 1-2 times a year, which is more than I would have ever thought possible).

Heavy duty one: Powerlock from Sog
EDC: Either a Wave or a Rebar from Leatherman(rebar if you want to cut down on weight and have it more comfortable for pocket carry)
Light duty: S2 from leatherman
keychain: Micra or Pulse from leatherman

Victorinox makes some great ones too, but they arnt much better than leatherman ones and cost quite a bit more. The Swisstool spirit(>>520880) is probably the classiest/most elegant looking multitool out there so if you're trying to look professional it is worth considering.

You can outright dismiss Gerber stuff though. Only their MP600/650 is worth anything, and even than its still not as good as what leatherman or sog sells at the same price point.

I love the blade profile on it though... Freestyle is basically the same tool chopped down a bit to save space(no carabiner or screwdriver) so its a bit more practical as a knife, with a shitty pair of pliers that might be useful in a pinch.

I have a sidekick. I use it a lot and its never broke or left me without a tool I needed. And when I dont have a belt, the clip lets me clip it to my waistband against my hip, and its so light I dont even feel it. The cost is very reasonable too. Personally, I would suggest it.
