Firing it up in a log fire, burns the charcoal and carbon bonds the surface of the metal. Throwing it into a stone firepit further refines and melts said metal and carbon together. Then basic hammer, fold, mold, and shape/form it into knifes, hammers, etc.
All together, setting up the fires, gathering the 60-140 lbs of unrefined rock for 3-5lbs of refined metal is not too bad. Better than current gold mining ratios. Experts are those who know the "OLD WAYS" of building/sourcing/processing things. Think those groups of engineers/scientists/sociologists that get together to make/figure out how to start civilization over again from nothing but naturally occurring materials and resources.
