I have a mini-grip with yellow handles and sheepsfoot blade.

Its alright, but I bought it online for about $35.
That was before they put a ban on selling new benchmades online which artificially doubled the price of all their knives.

They arent worth the going prices at all, especially when you have Spyderco out there.

Funny, I actually bought the sheepsfoot mini grip BECAUSE it had the hole.
The control it gives you while opening is unmatched by anything else.

705S on my side for ... at least 10 years.

Thought I lost it about 5 years ago... rough week, for some reason I threw it (and my phone, keys, wallet) across the room and the knife slipped behind the dresser. Found it a couple days later.

Busted the tip off prying a motorcycle head off the cylinder. $5, reshaped blade (couldn't replace because discontinued years ago), serviced, sharpened, cleaned, returned.

Keep thinking about buying another, replacing this one... really no reason, when this one still works great.

Here's to the next 10 years...

I dont know if i made the right choice by going partially serrated. Ive never "owned" a knife before so i thought it might come in handy. But upon further reading alot of people say the serration is somewhat useless and veterans prefer a plain edged blade.

I dislike the handle as well so im going to have to throw $100 bucks out for metal scales. Ive thought about composite scales, which they too- look nice but the metal scales change the butt end of the grip shape. To me that would finish off the knife but then i couldve upped my budget to 2bills to begin with.

I did look into all the different scale options. Wilkins scales are too expensive and composite scales dont change the overall shape of the handle. I dislike the oblong handle shape. Im not really looking into collecting knives or having more than one at any given point. Thats why i thought investing in the aluminum scales was worth it. I would have a custom knife i like that i keep for the next decade or so.

I don't use the serrations much, but when I do, they're nice to have.

For usual blade stuff I do, I've never really needed more than the 2" or so unserrated area.

My next one will have the serrations.

Is your dislike of the handle simply that the knife is new? I'd give it a few weeks before you go throwing another benjamin at it.

Having serrations takes away half of your cutting area and really dont have a lot of everyday use.

So in 90% of your cutting needs, you are stuck with less blade to cut and slice things, which in turn dulls the edge faster.

Its really not that hard of a concept to grasp.
Using a smaller piece of straight blade more often than you otherwise would have makes "sharpening as needed" more frequent.

But more importantly the heel part of the blade is where you get all of your power.
When you need to slice something, and the heel has fucking worthless serrations, it makes your knife less functional from a cutting standpoint

Thank god you have your "just in case" serrations so you can roughly chew through stuff your blade wont easliy slice.

How often do you use the whole length of the blade when slicing?
Theres enough of a stroke on the plain edge portion of the knife to do any normal everyday slicing. The length of an extra inch of stroke is not going to be of any noticeable advantage over the "overuse" of a smaller piece of straight blade.

Almost never, because the belly and tip are much harder to cut with than the heel of the blade.
So when you take away the large heel to cut from and you are stuck with just the lower side of the belly for all your slicing, it makes a big difference in edge retention.

When you grip the handle it forces you to angle the blade towards the belly because your knuckles get in the way. Unless you want to hold the blade with your fingertips like if its some sort of vegetable chopper.

Buck does a great job treating their 420HC, but a decent HT on a superior steel will outperform said 420HC in every respect.

As for opening a knife one-handed, that's pretty important in a lot of places, namely anywhere you might only have one hand free. See: farm work, kayaking, rock climbing, jerking off to Buck knifes.

The primary reason most people don't like serrations is that they are more difficult to sharpen, especially "in the field". However, I also have a partially serratted Mini-Griptilian in scary-tactical-black, and have found that I simply have never needed to sharpen the serrations. I've run a honing rod across them once or twice, but really it was unnecessary to do so as they still cut through cable-ties just fine. Then again, that's more of an occupational situation, I run wire for an alarm company and and use zip-ties almost every other day. I either use my tin-snips or my Benchmade to cut them depending on the angle. I also have a beater knife, a Gerber Remix, never sharpened the serrations in over a year of hard outdoor work on the job, and the serrations still cut. Serrations simply need less care.

For bushcraft though, non-serrated is the only way I could go. Just more practical to have a plain edge when working with wood IMO.

I got these two pieces of shit for EDC. The S&W was $10, its a fine beater. The Columbia River was $25.
The CRKT Drifter is a nice knife. Opens smoothly, locks tight, holds a decent edge. What else do you need from a folder.
