Sleeping mats.

Should I get pic related or stay with self-inflating mats? What are you guys using at the moment?

Pic related weighs about the same as the self-inflating mats within my price range (800g) but is half the price, packs down smaller and looks like it would be a lot more comfortable.

The downside is that it's not massively warm, but that just rules it out of winter use. Rest of the year it's fine (uk).

At 800g though the one you mention seems to be lacking one of the big advantages of this style mats.

I see it's a gellert mat, so i'll assume you're in the UK and recommend the Alpkit Numo if you want one in that style. I own one and am very happy. £35. Less than half the weight.

Exped down mats are pretty much the warmest mat on the market, but the don't come for cheap.

I have used the downmat by itself in temps as low as -28C and never had issues with warmth.

The xtherm I have used down to about -10C alone, and around 15C with the foam underneath. Again no real issues but when used by itself it is clear it does not insulate as well as the downmat (after a night or two you will see the snow under you melting down a bit).

The foam is all I have ever needed for temps above freezing.

I sleep on the floor year round so I don't have issues with comfort when it comes to harder surfaces.

Personally my experience with self-inflating has been that they never inflate well enough to be truly "self-inflating".

I moved from a thermarest selfinflate to a off brand normal inflateable. 50% weightreduction so worth it.

Every single thermarest self inflating mat I have used, and I have used like 4, has been terrible. They are either too thin, too bulky or they never fucking inflate. I got the Exped that I posted here >>523406 because of how godddamned sick I was of thermarest being shit for the self inflating kind and I didnt want the termarest that sounds like I am sleeping on a trashbag full of tin foil.

Thanks for the helpful reply anon. Right now I cant afford to spend £35 on a mat, money is tight at the moment and the most I can stretch to is about £20. But if it's fine for summer use then i'll go right ahead with the gelert one. I've bookmarked the Numo for future purchase though :)

That mat is £172 on sale o_O It's fucking nice no doubt but waaay outside my price range, plus it weighs about the same as my tent.

For that money i'd probably just get the fanciest (thickest) closed cell foam mat I could find, they really are incredibly light despite being bulky. Even a not-so fancy one will be good now I mention it.

Plus, with a foam mat, if you do eventually get a numo (or other fancier mat) you can double 'em up in winter without weighing too much.

Ya can juuuust squeeeze in a ridge rest off ebay in your budget. Mats with wobbles and whatnot in 'em are a slight advantage, but not a massive one.

That gelert mat is cheap as fuck i'll give it that, but 800g is quite a lot if you're planning on carrying it anywhere (in conjunction with other heavy gear) so, well, I dunno. It will be comfy as fuck I suppose.

Its the bulkyness that puts me off foam mats. Those ridgerest mats look to be almost the same size as my pack when its rolled up. I really dont mind a little extra weight if the mat packs down small. I'd rather not go over 800g though.

Could you not just throw one of those emergency foil blankets underneath an inflatable mat for a bit more thermal protection from the ground?

Yeah those foam mats just have to go on the outside of packs generally, which is orrite once you're used to the idea (it's really not as annoying as one would imagine, assuming you've not trued it before) but I get that it's not as nice as a small folded up mat in yer bag.

RE: foil blankets, I think it's pretty much useless, in that it's not radiated heat that makes you cold on a sleeping mat, but the other type which i can't rememebr the name of. Conductive or convective or some shit. Long story short is it's negligible if any deference. I think they need an air gap or some shit too but I dunno.

Tried it a couple times, didin't notice a difference, and the floor was still cold as fuck to sit on without a mat.

I have a few of those foil blankets kicking about some where, maybe i'll try it anyway. Another option could be something like this? Its a foil emergency blanket with an added fleece lining for extra warmth. Cheap enough, twice the tog rating of a summer duvet according to the website but weight is not listed.

I have something very similar I put under my numo when it was a bit chilly. Worked well. I liked. Good and cheap too.

Self inflating are foam filled.
They're alright and IMO more comfortable than op's pic.
I did, however, switch to OP's pic because it deflates to the size of a 40oz beer can and stores easily inside my pack. It's an internal frame pack and having the sleeping mat on the outside really bothered me.
