What are you using /out/?

I like to read a lot while i'm /out/ and i'm looking for something a bit more economical to hang in the tent. I was considering a Uco Candle Lantern though they seem a bit overpriced for what they are, still, the extra warmth and the lovely glow of candle light may be worth it.

If you insist on a candle lantern, you can try the one by Coghlan. It's not the absolute best, but I have one and it works decently enough with a tea light. If you want one lower in the tent, a soda can may be made into a candle lantern; just cut two doors in the side.

For battery lights, something small, using a single cell (I prefer using one AAA or AA) like a pocket flashlight or a head lamp is great. There are myriad things you can do. The Martac AAA flashlight has an optional diffuser that turns the flashlight into a mini lantern, and it glows in the dark when the light is turned off. It's just an example. I like mine. And don't forget about the water jug (or bottle) trick to diffuse light, or just hanging the flashlight to spread the glow.

Well I had been using battery lights but they just dont seem to last as long as I would like. When it comes to candle lanterns i'd really prefer one with where the flame is contained for obvious reasons, so I wouldnt be comfortable making one from a soda can.

O'Pea have you considered the ol' headlamp water bottle trick? I always do this, because I always have both with me anyway. Also you could just plain wear the headlamp but it's not very comfortable for very long (i.e. reading)

I've never bothered with the bottle trick because I only take my bladder and a spare steel bottle /out/ with me. I usually use a small cree l.e.d torch tied to the top of my tent which I bring specifically for reading with but even on 50% power mode, the batteries dont seem to last as long as I would like.

I reserve my head torch for nighttime tasks...cooking, taking a dump etc,

You can drop the cash on something expensive, but that's silly. Pick up a cheap lantern from walmart or like another Anon said, cut up a coke can. With some sand paper, pliers and a little paint you could easily make a really nice one out of a can.

Personally, I use an old aluminum built Lantern I found in a buddies garage. Sure, gotta take oil with me but it's light as shit and decent.

It's one of those portable battery chargers for USB devices but also functions as a flashlight/lantern combo

It's not very bright at all so you couldn't use it like a real flashlight but it works just fine for illuminating a small area if you need a little bit of light. I'd say it works at least as good as the "headlamp+water bottle" thing.

I mentioned over in a thread about camp bedding, that I picked up a flexible neck clip-on battery powered LED reading light, that I clamp onto the back of my cot, which allows me to read in bed. This can also obviously be used when cooking or whatnot, so you can WTF you're doing.

I'd suggest the more batteries the better and as a large clip as possible, making it longer lasting and more stable.

As I said, I do a lot of reading and I just feel more comfortable having a small light dedicated to that particular task. Its just a bit of a nuisance having to untie my headlamp every time I want to use it for something. I like having a light up and simply leaving it there.

Anyway I just picked up pic related to try out. It was £2.50 in a local supermarket and gives out 25 lumens, which is 5 lumens more than the uco original candle lantern and a lot less than the cree l.e.d torch I have been using, so it should be a lot more efficient.

I've used both and IMO the UCO is well worth the money if you're going to use it more than a few times. Mine's almost 20 years old and though I've had to replace the glass after a drunken beach party it's pretty durable if you don't abuse it, also, you can actually get replacement glass. The add-on reflector makes a nice spot of light underneath that you can sit under and read, instead of the shadow you'd get without.

The one downside to the original model is that it uses special candles, these are cheap and easy to get in Canada (at MEC) but when I was traveling in Australia/South Pacific, they were expensive and hard to find. They make one that takes tea lights now, so that wouldn't be a problem.

That said, these days I still use the UCO as an outside camp lantern (the flame is cheerful especially on solo trips) but use an LED light inside the tent for safety.

Well, shit. 20 years is good innings for ANY piece of kit. Yeah those candles are not too cheap here in the uk. They're around £5+ for the 3 standard ones, which is pretty steep to be honest.

I really do like the idea of these inflatable solar powered lights though. I'm thinking of throwing some money at those luminade lights. They seem pretty awesome.

The candles do burn for a long time though, if you use them sparingly instead of staying up all night one can last a week or more. I also got an oil lamp insert for mine but it's smoky and sooty, it was OK for sitting out in the back yard with a beer and not wasting candles but kind of messy for camping.

If I was buying one now I'd probably get one of the tea light models (micro or mini).

Yeah 9 hours each I believe. I looked at the micro but tea lights only give off 15 lumens of light or less depending on their quality and I dont think that would be enough light for me. I like the original uco because its brighter and it has quite a number of accessories available for it, which are pretty neat.

I think i'll leave the uco on the back burner for now and have a go with the inflatable solar type lights next. Thanks for the input though.

I love these things. Its not a crucial piece of gear, but its really nice to have with me while out. The candle lasts a decent amount of time, puts out some warmth, and is just overall comfy.

My only real problem is that, as I use it infrequently, I often forget not to close it after use by pressing down with my palm. That is a hurt that doesn't go away quickly.

I grew up with one of these as the after dark light. We had this and an old pup tent. It's one of those things that i want my kids to remember when we're backpacking, but i have a feeling they won't remember dad's candle lantern, but rather the solar charger for their phone.

I'm with >>527550 on this. A solar charger is just everyday tech now, a useful, albeit bland, tool. A candle lantern is distinctly olde worlde, even with its modern design so I think a thing like that would certainly stick out in your kids minds when they look back in the future.

It gets hot enough to ruin your night in a few minutes. For whatever reason I've actually never done it while out, but when I'm dicking around with it at home I inevitably slap it shut. Its a pain that doesn't register until a few moments after its closed, but last long enough into the night to remind myself how much of a dumbass I can be at times.

I use Spark SX5 which can stay on for 35 days straight on 3 AAA's at .5 lumens. Even with the moonlight mode it's still a bit bright, so I use a diffuser to even out the light and diminish glare on my e-reader

I use one of pic related. I got some Chinese knock off that only cost like $5 on amazon and it is great. Lasts forever and is super bright in the tent, hangs on a small clip from the top of the tent or you can put it in a gear loft.
