Best kept secret camping spots?

I need to find a good extremely secluded backpacking spot. A few friends and I are planning on going backpacking in a couple weeks and was hoping someone could recommend us a location near the Denver/Central Colorado area. I'm fine with a bit of a drive, but I'm tired of seeing other campers while I'm /out/. I go /out/ to escape the real world so I hate running into it.

But so I dont shit up the board for one question, this can be a best kept secret camping spot thread. Post pics from your camp sites, share stories, locations, whatever.

Picture kinda related I guess. Its our shooting spot in pikes national Forest. Its a pretty popular one, but its large enough that everyone gets their own space.

theres generally no way to escape people during peak season, unless you just drive further(at least thats the case here in canada)

youd have to have one peach of a location, and it damn sure wouldnt be public in high season.

this is why i almost exclusively camp fall/winter/spring. summer camping is a fucking disco half the time at any reasonable location.

depending on your needs i dont see why you couldnt just go somewhere others wouldnt want to go, think barriers to entry. a long walk, a harsh hike up mountains. the easier the access the more people there will be.

I recommend anywhere in Eagle county. I camp/hunt up near Dotsero/Gypsum and it's pretty quiet usually until the hunting season.

It'll be a bit outside your described range, but the San Juans are extremely remote. Hike towards Cascade Falls, but cross the river on the first chance you get and don't keep along side it on the trails. Eventually you'll reach a bigass meadow in a remote subalpine pass. Doesn't even take that long, but you oughta not see anyone. That's my suggestion. But like I kinda noted earlier, just the San Juans in general.

The San Juan does seem pretty great, I've been trying to convince myself to go down there but its about a 6 hour drive for me. I might just suck it up

UK here, like what you said its far easier to camp undisturbed if you're willing to go off the beaten path. even doing something as simple as crossing a knee high river puts most casual campers off.

most ive found that ive been left alone if any type of uphill walk is involved, family campers and party campers always have way too much stuff with them so climbing up some rocks off the path or just hiking further into the wood than other people will go will get you away from most campers

Definitely worth it. Idk, long drives are nothing to me, but the San Juan's are referred to as the Swiss Alps of America. I'll post some pics when I get home later.

Look up Nederland near Boulder which is by Denver. You can get there via public transit or hitchhiking once you get to Boulder or so. The hitch between Ned and Boulder is one of the easiest in the states. Once there you have plenty of options for hiking and camping away inna woods. Near Nederland, some of the camping might be blown up at West Magnolia or mile marker 37&1/2; the closest spots to Nederland with free camping and good Scenery south or north from Ned respectively, both an easy hitch. There's more camping north past 37&1/2 that's more secluded, just look for a turn off to the right, past 37 a mile or two. Last time I was at that spot there was plenty of shooting at the other camps close by. Further south is Rollinsville and beyond that plenty of beautiful mountain hitchhiking all the way to I70, which goes back east to Denver if you felt so inclined. The northern route is similarly beautiful and you could loop back to Denver that way too if you wanted.

Beautiful area, good pot, decent women. Nederland is a good town in the summer and one of the hardest towns to live in during the winter, apparently. I don't know, I left in early september last year after a month and a half or so camping thing there. Got snowed on the night in left. Good times.

Nowhere very remote unless you plan to go out to the Anza Borrego. The best I can think of is the Laguna Mountains (for a short drive), but if you're willing to go a bit further, the San Bernandino's are the biggest range in the area, so you'll probably find a remote spot out there.

One of many abandoned gold mines you may stumble across. Some are near the gravel road out of Silverton, and some, like this one, are on remote offshoots that no one ever goes to except for a few vagabonds who live nearby in their campers all year.

Do you have experience in Anza Borrego? It's super close I just don't really know where to go. I've thought about going up palm canyon until I find where the water comes from, if you're familiar with that

Yeah, some. It's easily one of the most inhospitable deserts in the country. If I were you, Palm Canyon seems like a cool idea, also, the foothills of the Cuyumaca and Laguna mountains will give you a good taste of the desert, and not many people go there to hike n what not. There's only a couple sources of water in that desert, so you'll havta bring enormous amounts yourself. Try to pack most of it on the outside of your pack. Perhaps allow your Circadian Rythem to transfer to nighttime, cause day hiking can fuck you up out there. I prefer the nighttime, plus it's absolutely beautiful at night, and the moon, stars, and white sand will make it perfectly visible. Animals aren't a huge problem. Not many rodents n such, therefore, not many snakes. Small rock lizards, scorpions, and the like will inhabit most of the land. In the bushier areas, like around the hilly part of Ocotillo Wells, there are plenty of roadrunners, snakes, and birds of prey.
If you're looking for a remote place without people, like OP, Palm Canyon may not work for you, but anywhere else might just straight up kill you if you ain't damn good at leveling yourself with the land.
Also, I'd recomend going in fall. It's after the bulk of the summer's heat, but before the winter's flash floods.

I've been to palm canyon and I know what you're talking about but after that little area with all the trees I think it would be pretty much empty because that's where the maintained trail ends. But thank for the foothills recommendation I'll definitely be checking that out.
