I want to try lightweight camping. I have no camping equipment. I have $150 to spend on my whole setup. The entire setup weight should be less than 20 lbs.

Areas to cover:
>Shelter
>Sleeping system
>Pack bag
>Food equipment
>food
>Outdoor essentials (Knife, navigation, firestarting, etc)

For the purpose of this thread, assume I have sneakers/workboots and a raincoat.

Is that 20lbs your total weight? Because 3L of water is just over 6lbs.

So for shelter youre probably looking at a cheap light duty tarp.
Blanket for sleep system for lightweight. Or cheap bag, but it will be large and heavier.
I'm sure there's a decent bag at walmart. Just get one that has good padding.food equipment. .for the weight and cost you are just gonna have to get what suits your cooking preference. A light aluminum pot could be all you need. Boil water, cook stew or soup.
As far as the equipment, im not sure. For cost and weight you could probably get by with a pocket knife of any brand, Bic lighter, and a basic first aid kit. Just get whatever food you want. Pasta sides and a log of summer sausage and you are good for a night.

So, i think the thing is that you can camp for 150 easy. Backpacking sure. Thru hiking will be uncomfortable. Light weight is probably not gonna happen. Pick something important and buy the best you can stand to get this time around. Slowly over time invest in your gear until you have all the things you want. Good gear will damn near last a lifetime.

My sleeping system weighs 1600g, well worth it. In Denmark it is a fair price. My backpack is a little expensive, you could get a more lightweight one for 242 (but mine i tacticool, and i fall for that shit)
If you do not use waterblatter your weight in the backpack can get asymmetrical.
Paracord because of my hammock. I'll get a tarp also, so i can build a shelter easily.

Paracord for various things from drying clothing to making a rain-proof shelter from the tarp: $5

You can learn and practice fire making skills like the Fire-plow, Bow-and-drill, Hand-drill, etc. It is actually really easy to do, just practice a lot. All which use natural local items you can source. You can save money on cooking supplies by only eating cold things, but if you want to make potable water without expensive filters or tabs tossed in the water you'll need to boil it. Personally, I eat cold foods and roast some with sticks. No need for cooking gear.

You can also make a shelter yourself from the surrounding materials.

The biggest problem with your question, is that no one here knows where you'll be camping and what natural resources you'll be accessing or even allowed to access. Knowing that changes what you may need to bring.

It depends on what kind of out he's doing. I'm guessing long distance backpacking. The bag is important. The sleep system is probably not the absolute greatest. ..but suited to his needs. The water bladder is a preference. The Paracord is just Paracord. Everyone has different gear preferences.

I wouldn't solely rely on phone for navigation. Batteries and signal blah blah. Not for more than a short day hike. A silva compass can run from 10 bucks to whatever you have to burn. A map can be printed off. He needs to learn that skill before just relying on tech.

Bags, and a lot of them. If it can be rainy the last thing you want is that everyting is wet. Put your stuff in sealed bags. A small mat would be nice to sit on (from normal sleeping pad/foam), some form of electric light, ducttape/electrictape and medic things. Then i think you are good to go. The last 3 things are essentiel.

Not necessary. I just keep my maps in a ziplock sandwich bag. Do you have to pay for topo maps or was that cost the lamination?

Yes and no. Canned beans are probably heavier than a canister stove and dehydrated foods put together. Someone absolutely could go no cooking. Most places that have no fires still allow stoves though. All your foods are great too. It really comes down to preferred way of being out and level of comfort. Also if op is wanting to go light, he will probably require mostly dried foods.

Look up what I think is "Hudson bay pack". Gives your tarp some other use apart from being a roof.

For sleep, you can build a raised bed from boughs and stuff, and make a longfire for heat. SO basically just a hatchet for that. Maybe a woolen blanket, if you want.

Food equipment: Knife. You need nothing more, eat like medieval. Also, a lightweight water bottle and a mess kit.

Food: Make it as dense as possible. How long do you want to go? Buy meat cans. The cans are a little heavy, but the nutritional value makes up for it.

Navigation etc. Take a phone with offline maps, and if not applicable, take a map of the area and learn to orient with what you can find (compasses are heavy, man).

Firestarting: A lighter (inb4 shitstorm a brewin') or a ferro rod.

Knife: Any knife. take one from your kitchen, they sharp enough.

The tarp-style pack will cut down on weight, but it may be uncomfortable.

Sources: I have bought my kit over the years and this is what I'd do if I had 150$ and had to leave in 2 days (a couple hours to buy shit and the rest of the time to learn everything.)

Hit up freecycle looking for large volume backpacks, sleeping bags or small tents people want rid of. Put an ad out that you want those items.

If I had to buy them I'd buy a small, cheap 2 man tent, a ground sheet and a large tarp to put over the top of the tent, either pegged over it or tied above using trees.

I can get a 2 man tent with a 3000mm HH for about £20. A gelert groundsheet for £3.00 and a large tarp for around a fiver. Those 3 combined should be enough to keep you warm and dry and i'm sure you could find similar items in the U.S somewhere.

maybe 2 tarps so that it's easier for a beginner to setup, and a foam mat to insulate from the ground ($10)

and of course, practice setting everything up at home several times before going out, so that you'll have an idea of what to expect. definitely sleep in your new sleeping bag a few times too, so that you can get used to the feel of it.

Yes, you can save coin by not buying cook gear. But let's be honest, cooking is part of the fun to be had.

hotdogs are cheap and great over an open fire. You can forage for wild plants, too. Grab a book from your library. Bring a lot of water. All in all, maybe $5 per night depending on the food you get. If you're near a creak, you can try making fishing traps out of water bottles and catching some fish.

Cotton balls, lighter/matches. $5. The cotton balls make excellent tinder. As long as you can build a fire, you'll be fine. Put the balls and lighter/matches in a ziploc baggy so they don't get wet or dirty. You don't want your lighter to stop working suddenly.

depending on where you're going, might be pointless.Since you have no camping equipment, I doubt you're heading off into a random area and will probably find a trail people commonly camp at. in that case, you don't need navigation. If you do, compass and a map. $5

I just packed some old ratty pants and jumpers, didn't bother with hiking boots just old nike runners. I guess I spent about $160 plus food, but I didn't have to buy shoes or a bag. Biggest expense should be sleeping system imho because if you're cold at night, you're fucked. also a few months ago I got a two man dome tent for $35, weighs 2kg i think

1. don't bring a tent. Sleeping pad, sleeping bag. If there's rain, you may bring 1 sheet of tyvek

I really don't think a $30 tent is an onerous burden, and it can still be used later on if he decides to camp in poor weather where a tarp is simply no fun. plus, if his campsite is bug heavy, a tent will let him sleep unmolested.

remember, he's new to this. and no matter how poor he might be, I'm sure he doesn't want to be wet and cold.

Also these clothes can be worn over the regular clothes after hiking, should it get cold.

If you're /out/ for say, 5 days, that means that you have to carry the water for those beans for the entire duration you're carrying them. You don't carry 5 days worth of water, and I'm assuming you're not eating all of your beans on day 1, so it increases your overall weight for the duration of the trip. In other words, you're carrying the water for day 5's food for 5 days, as opposed to only having to carry it for one day or not at all if you make your dehydrated food by a water source.

If you carry your beans wet, that means you carry that volume of water that you cannot drink for the ENTIRE DURATION OF THE TRIP. If you carry dried food, then you only carry that water the distance it takes to get from your last water source to your meal place.

No, you can just pack decently... A water bladder is more practical for drinking on the go, that's the only advantage. Otherwise it's more work than bottles.
