you want comfort and light weight
comfort and insulation usually go hand in hand, but insulation is not an important factor, its more marketing gimmick

anyway, those semi-inflatable mats are my favorite. the ones that use the ambient air to provide cushioning

they're extremely light, comfy, durable and well insulated.
any brand will do. typical REI shit is ok

Wut?! Surely, when it comes to mats, insulation is the MOST IMPORTANT factor. After all, that's it's primary function; to protect you from the cold ground.

Mat for insulation + Air Bed on top for comfort.

I don't know what would make one sleeping mat 'the' best. Pick one that's suited for the condition. For summer, I just use one of those reflective shades you put on your car's windshield as a mat. Cost like 3$ and weighs around 100g.

I'll suggest a closed cell foam mat.
examples:
-blue foam mat
-thermarest xlite
-thermarest ridgerest

these are all at or under 1 lb, insulate well for 3 seasons, will sort of fit into a hammock, can be used a dry/insulated pad for rest breaks and are absolutely indestructible (short of burning, and even then it'll probably just put a hole in it)

these are great qualities to have in piece of equipment for a long distance trip: being reliable, light, and multi use

If you're willing to trade compactness for weight and insulation closed cell is the way to go.

There's a reason every thru-hiker has a z-lite.

I also have an ALPS Mountaineering mat (The lightweight blue one). Works great, pretty light.

I really like the bag it came with, it was a bit of extra space so you don't need to get anal with making sure there is no air inside while rolling it up.

I have noticed that it's only partially self inflating and I usually give it a few lung fulls of air to top it up.

for the money its great. i think amazon has them for 50 bucks or somethin but opee should definitely pick one up at a sale. i was going to pick one of these up but they look a bit clumsy, albeit no doubt warm.

I always put mine under the lid and it doesn't stick out enough for me to notice. It is a bit larger than anything compressible, but for the price/weight/R-Value, you can't go wrong. I was looking at getting the Z Lite Sol next time I need a pad, because it packs down much smaller than the ridgerest. After some serious bushwhacking i've noticed a few pieces of foam ripped out by branches, regular wear and tear. I am impressed with its durability and comfort for such a thin foam pad.

but if you're ok with that, you'll never go back to the ordeal of unpacking/inflating/deflating/repacking an air mattress again. the simple joy of being able to pop the mat on the ground and sit or lie down anytime is amazing.

This is the only reason I won't get inflatable mattresses. I've used them before and my Riderest is almost as comfy and I don't have to deal with any bullshit.

OP here, after some deliberation I've come down to the Thermarest Z Lite and Basecamp mats: as I've said before I'm a newcomer to thru-hiking and have much to learn. I'm leaning towards the Basecamp because it is more versatile (in terms of all-season versatility), it's far more compact to store (as opposed to having to strap it the ZLite externally, which I don't have room for because of my tarp), and as a personal preference, I would prefer have one "well-rounded" mat, as opposed to two or three in temporal rotation. So my question is: it's stated that the Basecamp weighs 1.5 lbs more than the Z-Lite and is therefore better suited for camping than backpacking. I know weight adds up quickly with thru-hiking and particularly so while on the trails, but, to me, this additional weight gain nearly marginal- but is it? Thanks

What's wrong with that? They both weigh fuck all so it's not even like weight is an issue. An Air bed straight on to the cold ground isn't brilliant and will result in conductive heat loss, which is why you stick a mat underneath.

The basecamp mat with a 5.0 R value might be good at the basecamp on Mt Everest man but jesus don't take that backpacking. That mat alone weighs more than my tent and sleeping pad combined. Get the Z Lite, it is small and you can strap it under the lid of your backpack.

and for future reference, the basecamp rolls down to the same size as a zlite (I have the basecamp for car camping).

plus, the data is right in the graphic you posted. when the basecamp is described as 5"x21", that means a 5" diameter, 21" long cylinder, and no you can't pack it smaller than that! it's a foam filled mat that doesn't pack down to the ~1L sizes that other air mats do.
