for the weight, it's not really worth it for backpacking. even a light softshell is more than 10oz, and not truly waterproof. for that weight I can carry both a windbreaker and a waterproof jacket. plus, softshells are dreadful to wear once they're soaked.
basically, super cool clothes, but really don't make sense in a layering system.
for me, I go:
silk weight synthetic shirt
thin long sleeved wool sweater
down puffy
rain jacket
I just don't see where the softshell would improve my scheme. sure, it's more breathable, but ultimately too hot to wear when hiking anyways.
