Hop on forums specific to your sport, meet up with someone who's got gear you're interested in, see if they'll let you try it for a day.
May check around for rentals - I do this with camera gear. Glass I only use for one event a year, i'll just rent for $100 or so instead of dropping $4k on something I won't get the return from.
For snowmobiles/motorcycles, a lot of dealers do "demo days" on the mountain - let you take the new models out for an hour or so. Usually somewhat guided, one or two reps go with, may have 6-8 machines to borrow.
Rentals are another option, although if you're looking for something specific, rental outfits may not have what you're looking for (usually just base-model equipment).
Personally though I'd recommend meeting up with a group/organization and see if someone has the gear you're interested in and will let you borrow it.
