a buddy bought one a while back, and showed me the voodoo and witchcraft involved. he's able to cook, eat, clean up and pack away whist I'm still cooking, lets on that a 100g size fuel canister will boil around 12 ltrs of water to cook with MIND FUCKING BLOWN

bought one about 3 weeks back, am now kicking myself for all the time, and money wasted over the years.

I have one, it's a pain compared to my svea, but since I'm not a weight weenie, I carry both and use it to keep water hot. You do have to keep an eye on the cork. Had mine shoot 25' in the weeds and had to find the damn thing. Another time it went straight up and landed in a tree. I'll probably put a screw in the top and rig up a retaining chain.

Pic related. For it's size and weight, it's highly effective. Unless you're packing a 2lb hatchet, it's the most effective wood tool you'll take that fits in your pocket.

A wire saw is made of steel that bends heavily as you use it. It only lasts x number of pulls and then it breaks, and you don't know what that number is. It may be useful for military, as chances are it will not be needed. If it is, there are most likely multiple wire saws available.

If you go /out/ and you know there is a high probability you will need a saw, you want a saw that dulls, not a saw that breaks.

Really? Do you use it much? Had one once, found it fatiguing: it would bind up constantly and finally broke. I went to the hardware store when I was back in town and bought this. It comes with a sheath too, if you wrap a bunch of duct tape around the cardboard slip it's packaged in :D

Small Handsaws are great for out. I don't know for sure, but in some cases these may actually be lighter than bowsaws or even folding saws of similar size. Anyway, they are stronger and more comfortable to use.

If you think the handle is too heavy or too weak, you can easily build a new one. If it doesn't fit into your backpack, you can shorten the blade. If you want to go ultralight, remove some metal from the top. You're not making precision cuts in the woods.

I'm not a lumberjack or a carpenter. When I'm hiking I need compact and light. And yes I do go out often. Most shit can be cracked by hand. If hatchet didn't weigh so damn much, I'd carry one. Thinking about using a chainsaw chain for a handsaw.

That will not work. Any handsaw, even a bad one is better than these chain handsaws. Chain saws will not break like wire saws do but they are very inefficient. Any common saw, like Laplander or Opinel is many times more efficient.

If you don't believe me, go out and tryit out. It's tried and tested already and we know the results.

If you build a a bucksaw out of a chainsaw chain it will work better (reducing frictiong). It will work very much like a chainsaw with very little horsepower. I still don't recommed it. You're removing many times more wood than what's necessary and really, what's wrong with a handsaw or a bucksaw?

Not the OP, but if you just want to have a cup of coffee, this could be useful anywhere. When it's hot, the last thing you want is a blazing bonfire, just to have a cup of tea or coffee.

Yes, I have. It worked fine. I can post a pic if interested. It worked great alcohol and tablets, but I found it not too useful with sticks, getting shitty/wet wood to burn is still rather hard and takes a while, so I stopped using it in favor an alcohol stove, less to carry too. I think an alcohol/tablet stove only is much better for that cup of coffee.

You've got your terms mixed up. A thermal mass is used in a rocket mass heater to absorb heat from the exhaust gases and release it slowly into the heated area. A rocket stove ideally has almost no mass (but lots of lightweight insulation) so the heat isn't radiated but is instead focused and directed at the cooking vessel.

Didn't think of that, fair point. I never have coal in the woods though.

My point is just that alcohol can be used as a fire starter, and for cleaning (It de-infects and is a decent solvent)

And its only as much of a one trick pony as an alf stove, you can get creative with a jet boil.

The price and fuel availability are legitimate concerns. Its should also be noted these gas canisters don't preform well in the cold

In some situations i prefer liquid stoves but not the reasons you gave

I bring mine backpacking, fishing, and hunting. Lighter than a stove, and a handful of twigs and a match are all I need for a cup of coffee, or soup, or whatever.
The only problems are that the bottom of the aluminum cup is caked in soot, so I can't stuck in inside my pack without covering everything in soot, and the cork that came with the bottle is shit. Maybe it works for the Swiss, but I like to have a secure cap. Been looking for a silicone drain plug or some shit, but haven't found anything that'll fit yet.

Yeah, the energy density is less, no doubt. I personally still do alcohol. You can buy it here in every supermarket, 2 euros per litre, so it's easily available and very cheap indeed.
