So many conflicting reviews on amazon.
Which one is truly the best for the price.
Preferably in a pouch and waterproof. I wouldn't mind getting a headlamp either.

Think before asking. Buying a flashlight is just like buying a knife or any tool. It's all about personal preference. Read and watch the reviews, but concentrate on facts, not the opinions of reviewer.

Lumens/price ratio should be the last of your concerns. There are more important things to look at, eg reliability/price ratio, modes that are actually usable and most importantly the shape of the beam. And don't forget the mode memory, it's very important too, if you want it.

IMO the only weakness of HL50 is it's power button that can be accidentally pushed on in a backpack. It's not a big deal though, I can store the battery outside or simply have spare ones if this unlikely event ever occurs. Being easy to push, makes the power/mode button easy to use, I like that.

Are you /k/? Want to strap the flashlight to your babby killin salt rifle? Then you probably want a bright, but also very light one, and for uber tacticoolness you could use a strobe mode.

Don't have a rifle but need a self defense weapon, also you are good at playing baseball? Get one of those d-cell Maglights then, double use as a bludgeon. Also it has only one mode so it's just made for men of your intelligence.

Want to break in places, explore abandonned bunker complexes, and take photos all the while? (Thats what I do)
Got myself a Led Lenser P14. 2 modes, power save and normal, nothing funky. Shapeable beam, from ultrawide (pic related) to focussed for hundreds of metres.

This anon is right.

For taking pictures in the dark I often have to point the light away from the direction the camera is facing, or even partially obscure it because otherwise it just overloads the camera's sensor.

That being said, in my experience more lumens will enlarge the area you are lighting up.
If you're locked in a portapotty, 5 Lumens will be suns hellfire descending upon thine eyes, but if you're in the aussie outback at midnight, probably not so much.
As I said, depends on what you want to do.

Maybe not /out/-specific, but I bought a cheap Chinese "Tank007" pocket light with a Cree LED. Some of the things I like about it:

1. Light enough to carry 24/7 in pocket. I wrap a rubber band around mine so I can bite it while working on motorbike engine/chain

2. Three brightness levels, the brightest one lasts about 30 minutes

3. Uses a single AAA, same as my radio. I take a 24-pack on long trips

4. Has a lanyard ring to tie it up if you go swimming or boating

I'm pretty sure it's not meant to be waterproof, but it has an o-ring and I have put it throught the washing machine a couple times with no ill effects.

I'm really torn between a Nitecore HC50 & a Fenix HL23.

My flak with the HL23 is that it has no red light and probably can't remember the last mode it was in (meaning the highest is on by default). On the other hand, the HC50 probably can't take common AA batteries & is probably a pain to cycle through all the modes.

It's probably going to be my emergency light. More light is immensely helpful though.

Supposedly 520 something lumens on max, less on low, but a whopping 79 hours of life on low.

Takes 3 D batteries though. Only about 80$

A flashlight is a tube with a LED and a button. The Chinese are more than capable of pulling this off, this is something they can hardly fuck up, and you'll get much brighter LEDs than from some brands.

I myself got a small Ultrafire flashlight, cost me 2€ shipping included, and it's near perfection. My only gripe is how the button kinda works the other way around, lightly pushing it is enough to turn the flashlight on even if it doesn't click, making it likely to turn on in a bag if the slightest thing pushes on it.

But for that price I won't complain.

I got a Fenix E35UE for only 38€ for two reasons. The first one, i can get 150 hours with a very good light. And the second reason, because it's really durable with IP68.

For me, a flashlight it's an important tool, one of the most if you live in a rural area.

OxyLED MD50 is an excellent flashlight, very similar to what you have there. Five outputs including Strobe and SOS. Multiple choices of batteries. Zoomable slide...

$20.00 right now at amazon- solid little light you can cut steel with its so bright! (not really but extremely bright)

cheapest light there is. solid than most china stuff out there. just 1 AA battery to operate. mode consist of ( bright - dim - strobe - off ) pull the head to focus or spread the light. no worries of breaking since is so darn cheap

I don't get it. Why do you even need a flashlight while out? All the light you need would be provided by a campfire or you should be asleep. You shouldn't be hiking after dark. Your camp should be setup before dark.

The "oxy led" one with a charger can be hit or miss. I have purchased them before. They all work fine at first. Some haven't died butbsome just stop working after a few months.

They're also not waterproof, so be aware of that.

I have two main flash-lights that I use. I carry a Fenix E12 on my person at all times & I keep a Maglite full size 3 cell LED in my car.

I've used or at least had on myself the E12 everyday for the past three months. It takes a single double A. For 130 lumens at max setting I think it's pretty good. Especially at $30. It has 3 settings: Low (8 Lumens) Medium (50 Lumens) and High (130 Lumens). Because its so small I always carry it. It's beam is wide and on the highest setting it illuminates pretty far. Waterproof up to 2M. Only test of that I have would be accidentally dropping it into the toilet. Love it

Sorry for late response.
For nature, CRi is more important than lumens. You can see more with a higher CRI because the colors are more visible and you can discern between objects much easier. I highly recommend flood type headlight because it illuminates your peripheral vision. You get a better sense of your surroundings, both hands are free, and you don't get the tunnel vision of a spot light that makes shadows dance and only shows you a small spot that blinds everything else into pitch black. This is the best way to recreate daylight, which is what our eyes were made to see in.
The Floody aa high CRi daylight tint headlamp is the way to go. It will last you for years as it has for me.
I would not recommend any other light for the life of me.
Generally with flashlights, stay away from "cool blue" LEDs, as the colors of objects are blended into each other as a dull grey. Look into neutral/warm/daylight tints that can show colors better. Some manufacturers specify the tint/temperature of the LED that is sometimes shown in degrees of Kelvin. This is different from CRi. Always go high CRI if you have the option.

Eneloop batteries are going to hold your charge capacity for years. Get a pack of those and you will use them over a thousand times. No kidding.

Also, with a floody headlamp, it's not a bad idea to supplement with a throwier/spot light to see further into the distance to see far the trail or across a valley. Small single aa cell light in your pocket will do.

Remember, a light is suppose to illuminate an area for you to see, not to blind you with a super high lumen spot. That kinda thing is good to stick on a rifle with a long scope. Aka tacticool.

B&W vision is not a problem for me. Trees and plants are all green anyway. It's nice to see colours, but it's not that important IMO. A matter of personal preference I'd say.

When moving through a dark forest I want to be able to see three things:
1. Low hanging/sticking branches (I don't want to lose an eye)
2. Dangerous spots on the path (slippery rocks, ice and puddles)
3. Where I'm supposed to go

My favourite flashlight is Fenix LD22 that has 4 power levels. I can move in the dark using modes 2 and 3. This flashlight throws a very narrow beam but also floods some light which is enough to see branches. With a wider, floodier beam with similar power I would see the branches better, but not the slippery spots and not very far. When there are more lumens a headlamp with a wider beam is of course the way to go. LD22 has only 200 lumens but if you put it on mode 4 and look at something like a wet rock near your feet it blinds you.

This is what I prefer as long as it's not too bright. I see no point in lighting things I'm not looking at.

It's just that I find tactical flashlights with all sorts of well thought mounting points, knurlings and clips a lot more easy to hold and use than a Maglite or any other non-tactical flashlight. I don't buy anything based on what other people think of me.

Its wicked bright. I've changed the batteries once. You can get it about anywhere they sell Coleman products. Its not a bad buy.
