If you look into the Lewis & Clark and Jedediah Smith, et al journals you'll see how astounded these early expeditions were by grizzlies. They wouldn't die - dozens of rifle shots wouldn't do it. That's why the Davy Crockett myth was such a big deal. From what I've read a grizzly can be encouraged to stop an attack by playing dead (this is different btw than what you should do in a blackie attack). Fighting back and you're only gonna get more wrath.
