why do people make such a fuss about bags for longer hikes? personally i dont ever plan on staying out more then 3-4 days, im white as hell i burn too easy.

regarding bags, it's typical to carry between 16 (quite light) and 25/30 lbs (normal/heavy) on a 4 day backpacking trip. combined with climbing up and down, a pack is second only to shoes in terms of trail comfort and ergonomics. so yes, if you plan to stay out that long, get a bag that fits you well.

thin, long sleeved, loose, light colour cotton, cotton/polyester, or nylon button up shirts are great for hot sunny weather.

I really didn't hike until this year and I did a fairly tough (for me anyway) trip of about 30km over around 3 days.
Here's my thoughts on where I went wrong: proper comfortable footwear is a must. If doing sections with a lot of downhill you might consider those poles or else taking it easy, I really had a hard time with my knees by the end so much that I was walking like an old man with arthritis it was that slow. I brought too much food. I would say don't even bother with cans or any food that is already hydrated. I really killed myself in weight with food. I ate about half of what I brought in the end. Always bring mosquito repellant. Extra cloths werent really necessary. I brought a very cold weather sleeping bag. I didn't really need it although I was very comfortable at night. Bring a fork and spoon. I decided to just carve one but it was kind of time consuming and although adequate it wasn't the best to use.

What I did right: iodine bottle for simple water purification. bring a proper hatchet or small axe.
Lightweight tent that was waterproofed before going out. high protein granola bars worked well for me, as did the babybel cheese which had the bonus of the wax for firestarting. small pot with LID for faster boiling. forgot toilet paper but found sphagnum moss was a really excellent alternative. Like it better than toilet paper now.

Other thoughts: in one area firewood was harder to find beyond small sticks. It was wet out as well and it was hard to get a good boil going. a small twig stove would have helped me out there and I since made one out of some cans which works quite well. You can find some on youtube.

My mental state was really shot by the notion of having to walk out again with all that weight. Somehow I managed it but it was really tough. Some hikers who I met saw I was having a really rough time and offered to take some of my gear ahead of me but I refused on the grounds I got myself into this and I'd see my way out of it. But I was damn near crying when I reached my car finally. I think it took me about 5 hours to travel 6km for the final stretch, that's how wrecked I was.

one thing though i was thinking taking like, a white tank top, like those 'wonderloom' or whatever tanks you get at old navy, and using those for either tinder or bandaging should the need arise. thoughts?

I don't know where you are, but you can't really get iodine easily here. ANd water purification tabs are $20-30 for a pack(here). IMO a filter is the best option, sawyer ones are small and $20-30. For you first trips, maybe you could pack a decent amount of water and boil it if you need more.

Your bag doesn't look like it's up to multi day camping. I suggest getting one for sub $50 second hand if you want to get in cheap. Make sure it's a frame pack. And that it has good options to attach sleeping bag and such, or that it is 70 liters+

What kind of hiking are you doing?

That bag is totally fine for short-medium day hikes, longer hikes with a lot of weight I'd recommend something with a waist strap

Pic related is basically why fit, waist and sternum straps are important on your rucksack for hiking. The waist straps really help lift the load off your shoulders and make the whole thing so much more enjoyable.

OP your bag is fine for walking to work or going to class or something but when you are /out/ you are typically dealing with rough, alternating terrain and you need a bag that responds well and works with you as your body moves as you adapt to the terrain you are working through. You'll find yourself twisting, ducking, scrambling, crouching, leaning, bending and pretty much moving in all ways it is possible to move.

Another important feature are external compression straps. While, shoulder, waist and sternum straps keep your bag close your body, the external compression straps keep the contents of your pack still and as close to your center of mass as possible. This keeps you balanced and makes it less work to carry. One thing you dont want is stuff moving around in your pack as you walk or things hanging off your bag and swinging around like a pendulum as you move.

Not all packs have an external frame, nor need one. Many packs now simply have a rigid structure only on the part that contacts your back. Hell, my dad has been using a pack for years that has no frame or internal support whatsoever. It becomes rigid when he packs it and compresses the contents. It does however have a waist and sternum strap.

Called an internal frame. Because you NEED a frame.

If you have an internal frame you need it to be a lot bigger instead, so you can fit sleeping mat and bag inside of it.

Basically external frames are much more versatile, can carry more and more durable, while internal ones are lighter.

I'd say it depends on the size and weight of the pack. A small day pack with a few items in then an internal frame is not necessary. A big pack for camping trips that'll have all your gear in and weighs a lot, Internal frame is vital. Carrying a lot of weight without sucks dick.

I'm going for the midnight sun in July, in Lapland/Finland. It's going to be a 6hr bus ride from my hotel and (most likely) there's only one bus a day to and from my chosen hiking area. So I've decided to just stay out the whole night. The "hike" is only about 6 hours.

What I know I'll need:
bug spray, camera, water bottle, a packet of tissues, documents and money (I don't wanna leave that in my carry-on/hotel), shorts, socks, fake hipster sunglasses, light jacket and a couple of muesli bars/snacks to last me the night (from Lidl coz I've read that Finland gets expensive real fast).

What i think I'll need: Merrill hiking shoes (the most "appropriate" shoes I have are my Adidas runners), compression top and leggings (coz then bugs will have no choice but to go for my face/hands/neck instead ...on a scale of 1 to dumbass, how good is this idea?), a towel (for jumping into knee-deep shallow waters/river/creek and posing for Instagram photos) and a plastic bag to chuck it all in.

Can someone suggest some other basic necessities for me? I have no idea what I'm doing.
