I recently went to an REI garage sale with a buddy and got ourselves some goodies at 1/4th of the retail prices total. One of them was an REI half-dome 2 2015 version, which I paid 20 bucks for.

My problem with it is it includes tent poles for the Half-Dome 2 PLUS version, which is the reason why the product was returned. We tried sneaking with other poles at the sale but they didn't fit either. Pic related is what it looks like with the HD2 plus poles - clearly not fitting. I contacted tentpoletechnologies.com and they currently don't have them available (since apparently the 2015 version differs from the 2010-14 versions). Any /out/doorsmen have advice about where to get tent pole replacements or modifying them?

Also general tent thread I guess.

Why not contact REI directly and tell them your problem? They should be able to exchange them.

Most large companies have liberal customer service policies. Meaning if you have an issue, they'll more than likely fix it for free, even if it means a loss for them. Not always, but usually in my experience.

Or you could cut the pole at one of the breaks out joint or whatever. Maybe just not the end of the pole since it has that peg. Also i would cut a section that doesn't do a lot of bending, so it won't mind being straight. Maybe.

The poles are too long?

Difficult to see from your pic but if they are the usual shock corded fiberglass poles they can be easily shortened by untying the shock cord then sawing off a bit of the poles with a fine toothed hacksaw blade then filing or sanding the edges of the cut to keep it from splintering. The shock cord can be difficult to re-insert but it can be done by making a "needle" out of a long thin piece of stiff wire and using it to thread the the elastic back through the poles.

Don't cut off but a little of the length, maybe an inch at the most, then reassemble the tent and check the fit.

REI doesn't offer replacement poles, or at least the one I visited. I could try contacting a rep anyway and see if they'll trade/replace my poles. They're a bit pricey AFAIK so I doubt they'll do it for free without a return or something, god bless if they do.

They're DAC poles, not sure on the specifics but I'm guessing the same material as this:

And yeah they're too long. Even if I attempt to stretch the base the tension up top is too much. It's supposed to look like this: http://www.rei.com/product/878519/rei-half-dome-2-tent

No they aren't. The half dome 2 plus is slightly bigger so the poles are longer. That cross pole at the top of the tent should not be bent like that, it should be straight.

Also, if OP bought it a garage sale then it's as-is no swaps or returns, his best bet is to either trim the poles or order new ones from DAC.

Go to REI and purchase exact tent. Take correct poles from newly purchased tent and replace them with the incorrect poles. Return tent for full refund.
Not exactly honest but will work.
