This was in Oregon and the temps were in the 80's all week. I dug into where the water was coming from, not pouring out, but just seeping when I hit this rock.

It was in the middle of this hill. The pic makes it look like a sand mountain but I'm guessing it was only about 50 feet high.

I poured a little water on it and I was blown away. This wasn't a rock but Ice. It was cold and I could see into it about maybe a foot but then it got to dark.

I threw a rock at it hard and it kinda chipped. It was real solid. This completely blew me away. I put the dirt back on it and left. Now that I'm home I'm kicking myself for not taking video of it chipping. In the pics it looks like a rock.

So, WTF is ice doing buried under sand in 80 degree temps?

No OP but I agree. I mean, sand is known to insulate things like ice for a long time, but the conditions must have been perfect here for this to happen this way.

My guess would be river ice got trapped in the sediment during the spring thaw, and the sand / cold water has kept it solid thus long.
That argument might not hold up if it's a smaller river, but seeing as the riverbed extends 100 yards from the water it must be pretty big.

River isn't really that big at all, 20 feet across maybe it's just that when it rises it get pretty big.
