I always wondered about the legal point of living of the grid, being German I would get buttfucked by the law if a picked up a roadkill squirrel. Building a cabi, trapping and fishing?
You would have to pay shiploads of money for licences and stuff and would still not be able to truly be of grid, my fishing license cost about 560€.
What do?
If it like that everywhere?
I have considered moving, where?

The licence only gives you permission to operate a fishing pole, you still have to get the permission to fish in his waters from the owner of the body of water you want to fish in, or whoever rented it. Or pay the members fee in a fishing club, which is the way I choose

In Texas you don't even need a fishing license when you're fishing on private bodies of water (ponds and lakes owned by someone other than the state). A fishing license gives you the right to fish on any public waters (large lakes, community fishing pools, rivers & streams, coastal waters, etc.).

According to the German law, you can fish without a license if the body of water you fish from, is a "closed" which means that it has to be artificially made, closed against fish wandering in or out and it has to have to capabilities to be completely drained (eg. breeding ponds)
Most of those places are hyper commercialized where you stand around a 20m diameter pool together with other "fishermen" and pay for every kilo of caught fish or something.
You could compare the waters to roads and the fishing licence like a drivers licence, you can move on the road, but to drive on it with a car you need a licence.
What I mean by that is that you could theoretically catch fish with nets and stuff without a licence, since this isn't considered fishing, but rather "catching".
You still need the permission of the owner, which he will never give you in practice, if you don't have a licence.

There's not much public land for hunting, but all game animals are considered property of the state so you must buy a license in order to kill the animal (which belongs to the state) and then pay someone for the use of their private land to hunt on so it ends up costing much more than fishing does.

I'm from East Texas where rainfall is fairly plentiful and we have many creeks, rivers, and lakes in our area. There are about 8 major lakes within a 1.5 hour drive from my house and several large rivers. Far West Texas is very dry but from about the middle of the state on eastward there's a decent amount of water available for fishing.

Leasing private land to hunt on is where it gets expensive here.. If you're lucky then you might find a place to hunt deer and wild pigs for ~$1000 per person per season. Large leases that are in desirable areas (areas known to produce trophy-sized deer) can run $1000 per person per week or more. Then you run into the daily / weekly leases for hunting ducks or dove which can be outrageous too... Also remember that hunting/fishing licenses are only good for one state, if I wanted to hunt or fish in another state then I'd have to buy a costly non-resident (out of state) license. Luckily Texas is pretty big and has enough animals and fishing spots that I'm not TOO tempted to go do that in another state, but I would like to go Elk hunting at some point in one of the Rocky Mountain states.. That trip alone would probably run me around $2000+ for a week-long out of state hunting trip. Not sure if it's really worth it or not for the possibility of killing one animal.
